Tennis Can't Comeback, Lose 4-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No. 44 Oregon (6-3) found themselves on the wrong end of another tight match Sunday morning at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in Louisville, Ky., when No. 43 Louisville took down the Ducks 4-2.
How It Happened: The Cardinals began the match by winning the doubles point and claiming the 1-0 lead. Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Van Damrongsri took down Kevin Farin and Jayson Amos 6-2 on court 1, and Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown defeated Cormac Clissold and Simon Stevens at the No. 3 position 6-4 to secure the opening point.
In singles, the Ducks were able to make it a 1-1 match when Stevens polished off Damrongsri in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 on court five.
Louisville pulled ahead for good when Alex Gornet took down Daniel Sardu at the No. 3 position 6-2, 7-6 (3), giving the home team a 2-1 lead.
Farin gave the No. 1 ranked singles player in the country, Sebastian Stiefelmeyer, a battle on court one, but Stiefelmeyer pulled out a tooth-and-nail 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) victory that gave Louisville the 3-1 advantage.
The Ducks continued to scrap, and Amos kept UO in the match with a gutty 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory that drew the Ducks to within one of the Cardinals yet again (3-2).
Daan Maasland won the first set against Albert Wagner, but Wagner recovered to win the last two sets – 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5 – to secure the 4-2 victory for Louisville.
Clissold was in a three-set epic of his own (6-2, 6-7 (5) 6-6) when play was stopped.
What It Means: The Ducks fall to 6-3 on the season and Louisville improves to 3-2. Oregon is 0-3 in road matches this season.
Next Up: Oregon will take next weekend off and return to action on Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. at the Student Tennis Center to play Nebraska. That same weekend, the Ducks will play Santa Clara on Sunday at 11 a.m.
