STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Oregon women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-3 decision to No. 12 Stony Brook on a snowy Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.
How It Happened: The Ducks (8-3, 2-1) did everything they could on Saturday, but it was an uphill battle playing against the No. 2 defense in the country. Stony Brook opponents were averaging just 5.25 goals per game heading into Saturday's matchup.
Stony Brook (9-0, 1-0) ripped a goal past Janelle Parker right off the bat on the heels of Courtney Murphy, who finished with a game-high five goals, 25 seconds into the contest. The Seawolves would tack on three more before Carly O'Connell and Hayley Milner connected for back-to-back goals to make it 3-2 in favor of the home team.
That was the closes the Ducks would get to SBU all game. Oregon was held scoreless the rest of the half as Stony Brook took a commanding 9-2 lead into the break.
UO would score once more in the second half at the 24:54 mark on a free-position goal from Courtney Valdez. The Oregon offense, which came into the game averaging 13.40 goals, was held scoreless for the remainder of the second half after Valdez's goal.
Parker was lifted after SBU fired in its second goal of the second half. The redshirt freshman left the game with three saves and gave up 11 goals in 33:33 minutes of action. Jenna Morris, who saw action for the second-straight game, finished out the bout and gave up just five goals in 26:27 of action in the cage to go with one save.
By The Numbers: The last time Oregon lost in the double-digits was back in 2012 when the Ducks lost to No. 1 Northwestern, 15-2, in Evanston … Olivia Pyne saw her 15-game scoring streak snapped after the senior was held to just one shot on the day … Oregon is now 2-1 when its opponent scores first.
Up Next: Oregon now heads home to the friendly confines of Papé Field where they'll host a pair of Pac-12 Networks televised matches again USC (April 3) and California (April 5). First draw is set for 1 p.m. for both games. The Ducks will also be honoring their five seniors before the final home game of 2015 on Sunday, April 5, against the Golden Bears.
