EUGENE, Ore. — The second-ranked Oregon softball team hit three more home runs to support the two-hit pitching of Cheridan Hawkins in a 7-0 defeat of No. 19 Arizona State before 969 fans at Howe Field on Friday.
How It Happened: The Ducks (33-5, 11-2 Pac-12) scored first without the benefit of a hit, using two walks and two groundball outs to manufacture a run in the second inning. Hawkins (17-3) was perfect into the fourth, when she left a runner stranded at second after a walk and a wild pitch.
Oregon's bats came alive in the fifth, when the Ducks batted around. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, and catcher Janelle Lindvall quickly unloaded them when she unloaded on a pitch down and away for a grand slam. Koral Costa followed with her team-leading 12 home run of the season, Gwen Svekis added a pinch-hit homer in the sixth and Hawkins pitched around doubles by Arizona State (27-13) in each of the last two innings.
Quotable:
Mike White, UO coach
On Oregon's early manufactured run
"Everyone did their job on that one. Obviously that grand slam was big, because that gave us the cushion. But we're getting people on base. We had seven walks that game, and nine hits. That's a lot of runners on, so it gives us a lot of opportunities and doesn't give a lot of room to the pitcher."
Cheridan Hawkins, UO junior
On using her riseball to coax 11 flyballs and pop flies
"Just trying to get ahead with that pitch and then work it from there. I'll take an out any way I can get it, for sure."
Fun Fact: The Ducks have now homered in five straight games for the third time this season, and have three grand slams in their last two contests.
Up Next: Game two in the series is set for Saturday evening (5:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
