Ducks Cruise By Arizona, Win 4-1 in Tucson
04/11/15 | Men's Tennis
TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 56 Ducks cruised to a 4-1 victory over Arizona Friday afternoon at the LaNelle Robinson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz., thanks to a doubles point and three straight-set wins in singles. The result is the first Pac-12 win for UO (12-8, 1-4) on the season and the loss bumps Arizona down in the standings to 8-16 (0-5).
How It Happened: Stepping into a key road match and an even more important Pac-12 bout, the Ducks began the match by coming up with the crucial doubles point. Head coach Nils Schyllander tinkered with the tail end of the doubles lineup, and it produced good results.
Cormac Clissold teamed with Jayson Amos to take down the Wildcats' Will Kneale and Trevor James 6-1 on court three, and Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens toppled U of A's No. 1 pair of David Mushayev and Shoki Kashara 6-4 to give the visitors the 1-0 lead into singles.
Maasland - currently ranked No. 122 - continued on his tear in conference play and quickly tacked on another point to the Duck lead when he dispatched Mushayev at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-1. The junior is now 3-2 in conference play and 7-3 in his last 10 matches competing at mostly the No. 1 position.
Swaysland earned his first Pac-12 win of the spring thanks to a 6-4, 6-1 win over the Wildcats' Jose Zamorano on court six, to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Green and Yellow.
Arizona earned their lone point of the day when Jason Jaruvang edged out Daniel Sardu 6-2, 6-5 at the No. 2 spot. Clissold quickly picked up his teammate with a 7-5, 6-2 victory on court six, clinching the 4-1 win for the Ducks.
Simon Stevens led 6-2, 5-4 in his match at the No. 3 spot and Amos led 7-6, 4-3 on court four when play was suspended.
Controlling the Cats: Home or away, Oregon has had Arizona's number in recent history, winning the last five matches. In four out of the last five matches in the series, the Ducks have held the Wildcats to just one point in each overall match.
Momentum Builder: The win gives the Ducks some space between themselves and the bottom fourth of the conference. With Washington defeating Utah today 4-1 in Salt Lake City, the Ducks are now in a tie for fifth place in the Pac-12 with the Huskies. If UO is to take care of business against the Utes on Sunday, that will set up for very meaningful match against UW at home at the Student Tennis Center on Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m.
Notes: Maasland is now 19-8 on the year in singles play … Clissold's and Swaysland's wins were their first Pac-12 singles wins on the season … Stevens preserves his 13-match winning streak with the unfinished result … Ducks are now 11-1 on the season when winning the doubles point.
Next Up: UO will travel to Salt Lake City and take on Utah on Sunday, April 12 at noon (PT).
