Ducks Undone By Third Sets, Drop 5-2 Decision to Cal
04/05/15 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 51 Oregon men's tennis team couldn't convert in the third sets down the stretch in singles play, and No. 33 California took advantage winning 5-2 over the Ducks at the outdoor courts at the Student Tennis Center. The loss drops UO to 11-8 (0-4) on the season and brings the Golden Bears to 16-5 (4-0).
Match Breakdown: Oregon was a few shots away from winning doubles, but Cal did just enough to win the opening point. Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens got the Ducks out to an early lead with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot over Andre Goransson and Oskar Wikberg, but Cal responded with two 6-4 victories on courts three and two to draw first blood.
The Golden Bears pulled ahead 2-0 when Joey Swaysland dropped his match 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot to Cal's Mads Engsted.
Oregon fought back and made it a one-point match when Jayson Amos brought down Wikberg in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 on court four. Amos now has 20 (20-9) singles wins on the season and a 12-6 mark in duals play.
Cal put the match away when the 56th-ranked Goransson took down Maasland 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot and J.T. Nishimura outlasted Cormac Clissold 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 on court five to give the Golden Bears the 4-1 lead.
Stevens flashed his grit yet again against Bayane at the No. 3 spot and the freshman dispatched the Cal senior 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, giving the Charleroi, Belgium native 13-straight singles victories in the spring season.
The final score ended up being 5-2 when the No. 100 player in the ITA, Filip Bergevi, was able to edge out Daniel Sardu on court two in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
Three-Set Decisions: The Ducks put themselves in a 1-0 hole after dropping the doubles point, but UO seemed to be gaining momentum midway through singles play. Unfortunately, Oregon was on the losing end of three of the four matches that went to third sets.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
“We practiced well this week and we were right in these two matches, and we're going to practice even better next week, and win those next two matches … We are playing some of the best in the country and we are right there to win, now we need to just win.”
Freshman Simon Stevens
“Right now I trust myself. When I am playing on the court I try to find solutions, and I am able to do it. It's all about the confidence.”
Next Up: The Ducks will play at Arizona on Friday, April 10 and then at Utah on Sunday, April 12.
