Springfield, Mo. – Austin Grebeck, Scott Heineman and Mark Karaviotis combined for nine hits, nine runs scored and five RBI to lead No. 3 Oregon to a 12-6 win over No. 4 Canisius in a loser's out game at the Springfield Regional on Saturday.
How It Happened: Oregon (38-24) jumped on Canisius (34-30) early with four runs in the top of the first. Heineman gave Oregon the early lead with a two-run double to left center that scored Grebeck and Phil Craig St. Louis. Shaun Chase followed with a two-run homer to give Oregon a 4-0 lead. Chase's homer was his first since March 31.
The Ducks added to the lead with a run in the top of the second and another in the top of the third. Grebeck, who had Oregon's lone RBI in Friday's first-round loss, drove in Karaviotis with a ground-rule double into the right-field corner to push the lead to 5-0. Heineman scored the run in the third after doubling with one out, he then stole third and scored on a squeeze bunt by Daniel Patzlaff.
Oregon built the lead to 8-0 with one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Karaviotis led off the fourth with a single and scored on a two-out RBI single by Mitchell Tolman. Heineman single handedly accounted for the run in the fifth walking, stealing second and third and then scoring when Canisius catcher Jack Massa threw to first after Patzlaff chased a pitch in the dirt to strikeout.
Canisius scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-4, but Oregon countered with three runs in the top of the sixth to build the lead back to seven. Karaviotis led off the inning with his third hit of the game and scored on a single by Grebeck. Craig-St. Louis scored Grebeck with a RBI single before Tolman scored on a ground out by Scott Heineman.
After a scoreless seventh, Oregon added another run in the eighth on a double by Tolman that scored Grebeck, who led off the inning with a single.
Off And Running: Oregon had eight stolen bases in the game, one off the school record set on March 30, 1949 against Linfield. Heineman and Grebeck each had three, the most since Aaron Payne stole three in last year's regional tournament against Xavier, while Karaviotis swiped two.
Filling Up The Box Score: Karaviotis finished with a career-high four hits with a 4-for-4 effort with three runs scored, which matched his career high. Grebeck went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a career-high tying three runs scored. Heineman went 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored with a pair of doubles. His three runs scored tied a career high.
