Young Gets Chance to Set Pace with Indiana

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Joseph Young became the second NBA Draft choice of the Dana Altman era when he was selected 43rd overall by the Indiana Pacers Thursday night. Young was the 13th pick of the second round.
“It means a lot,” said Oregon assistant coach Kevin McKenna. “It's his life-long dream to hear his name called, and get picked and have a chance to play at the highest level. I think anybody that puts time into something wants to achieve, and Joe's put the time in. … Joe did all the work. We tried to help guide him in the right directions, but Joe did the work to put himself in this position.”
Young is the first Duck to be drafted since Arsalan Kazemi went to the Philadelphia 76ers as the 54th overall pick in the second round of the 2013 NBA Draft.
He is the highest Duck selected since Aaron Brooks was the 26th overall pick to Houston in 2007.
Young becomes Oregon's 47th all-time NBA Draft selection.
“Any time you have guys that have had success — and Kyle Korver, Anthony Tolliver were two guys that played for us at Creighton and had success — we've used that in our recruiting,” said McKenna. “And we've had a lot of guys play overseas and make a living at playing. It's nice to see Joe join those guys.”
Young, the 2015 Pac-12 Player of the Year and third-team all-American (Sporting News) tied the Oregon single-season record by scoring 745 points as a senior. He finished the season second in the country and first in the Pac-12 in free throw percentage (92.5 percent) in going 124-of-134, giving him the Oregon single season record. Young also set the Pac-12 and Oregon career free throw percentage marks at .900 (279-of-310).
The Houston, Texas, native was ninth in the country and first in the Pac-12 in scoring at 20.7 points per game.
Young tied NBA all-star Terrell Brandon's school record by scoring 745 points in 2014-15. He ended his two-year Oregon career with 1,388 points, which is the highest two year total in the program's history.
The last Duck to be drafted by the Pacers was Fred Jones, the No. 14 overall pick in 2002.
Jones played for Indiana from 2003-06, winning the NBA Slam Dunk title in 2004. Jones is the only Duck alum to have played for the Pacers.
Young will join forward Myles Turner of Texas, the No. 11 overall pick, as Indiana's rookie camp this fall.
