Ducks Open With Sweep of Temple
08/29/15 | Women's Volleyball
PHILADELPHIA – The Oregon volleyball team swept Temple 3-0 in its season-opening match, Friday night, defeating the Owls 25-15, 25-21, 25-16.
How It Happened: It was a senior and a freshman carrying the Ducks' attack on the outside as Martenne Bettendorf and Lindsey Vander Weide finished the night with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. The two hit for efficiency as well, both eclipsing the .400 mark and above the team average of .394.
It was a balanced attack which kept the Owls guessing in the first set, as four players finished the opening frame with three or more kills. And while the Ducks cruised through to a 25-15 win, they would have to fight their way out of a 12-9 deficit in the second set. It was at that moment when Oregon sparked a 5-0 run which included two kills down the line by Vander Weide.
The 2-0 lead helped Oregon's momentum, as did a 5-0 run to open the third set with three of the five points coming off blocks, of which the Ducks recorded 10 on the night. Temple never drew closer than three points as Oregon saw things through with a 25-16 win.
What It Means: Oregon started the 2015 season the same way it has started the past 11 seasons – with a win. Coach Moore is still unblemished in season openers, now with an 11-0 record. Defeating an experience Temple team at home in front of a big crowd will help push the Ducks in the right direction as they have two neutral-site matches against Navy and St. John's, Saturday.
Deep off the Bench: Twelve Oregon athletes saw playing time on Friday, with four-of-five freshman making their debut.
Notes and Numbers: Amanda Benson led the team with 15 digs…Maggie Scott started the season with a double-double, dishing out 37 assists while digging 10 balls…Kacey Nady led the team with six blocks, matching her six kills with no errors.
What's Next: Oregon will face Navy Saturday morning at 10 a.m. ET before St. John's at 3:30 p.m. ET. Neither match will be streamed but live stats for both can be found here.
