CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon notched a Civil War win, Thursday as the No. 18 volleyball team took down Oregon State in four sets, 25-16, 25-20, 30-32, 25-16.
How it Happened: Led by freshman Lindsey Vander Weide, who went a perfect 7-for-7 in the first set, the Ducks got off to a quick start and ran through the opening set with a 25-16 win. Although Oregon found a little more resistance in its 25-20 second-set win, the Ducks proved to be in the driver's seat in each with runs near the midway point. A 5-1 run in the first gave the Ducks a 13-8 lead, sending them on their way to a route, while a 4-0 run in the second set put the Ducks on top 13-11, a lead Oregon would never relinquish.
It was a career night for Vander Weide who finished with 25 kills and 16 digs, both career highs during her short stint in the Green and Yellow, as well as her first double-double. The Turlock, Calif., native was superbly efficient as well, hitting .457 and taking 20 attempts before recording her first hitting error of the night.
Oregon hit a bump in the third set, but showed their resiliency in a different way, fighting off seven Oregon State set points before the Beavers squeaked out a 32-30 win.
In the fourth and final set, Oregon returned to above .300 for the third of four sets in the match, hitting .306 and finishing off its in-state rival, 25-16.
What It Means: Regardless of the sport or opponent, a 16-day break will lead to questions of rust while returning to competition. The Ducks proved that would not be the case for them, as they came out quickly on Thursday. The win kick-starts the Ducks on the path of Pac-12 play, a race with no clear favorite in sight.
Noteworthy Newcomers: While Vander Weide's performance was hard to miss, fellow freshman Sumeet Gill started tonight in the place of another freshman, Lauren Page, who missed the night due to injury. Gill finished with three kills and led the team with four blocks, including an enthusiastic solo block in the first set. The trio is part of a five-person class which was ranked fourth in the nation.
Notes and Numbers: Maggie Scott joined Vander Weide with a double-double, assisting on 57 kills and recording 11 digs…Taylor Agost (13) and Kacey Nady (12) finished with double-digit kills…Amanda Benson helped her season average by recording a team high 22 digs.
What's Next: The Ducks will have one more road match before opening up at Matthew Knight Arena next week. Oregon will take on No. 14 Arizona in Tucson, Ariz., Sunday at 2 p.m. PT. That match will be broadcast on ESPNU.
