
Ducks Tally Ten Wins Saturday at Long Beach Invite

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Oregon women's tennis team had a successful second day at the Long Beach Invitational, going 7-1 in singles and 3-1 in doubles Saturday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
How It Happened: Oregon was matched up with Cal State Northridge in doubles and Denver in singles for Saturday's tournament action.
After splitting doubles with Long Beach State on Friday, the Ducks were triumphant over Cal State Northridge on the first, second and third doubles courts today. Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita defeated the Cal State Northridge tandem of Mickey Hsu and Kristin Poei, 6-4, on No. 1. In the second doubles spot, Ducks Kennan Johnson and Christi Woodson downed Vivian Lin and Skyla Alcon. Marlou Kluiving and Shweta Sangwan picked up Oregon's third win of the day with a 6-2 win over Ki Kim and Mari Taslagyan.
The Ducks topped Friday's impressive 6-2 singles mark by taking seven of eight matches today, with six of the Oregon wins coming in straight sets. After a straight-set win on No. 3 yesterday, Johnson earned her second win over a ranked opponent this season today, handling No.62 Julia O'Loughlin, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 1 spot.
Tobita, Kluiving, Sangwan, Woodson and Daniela Nasser also picked up their second wins of the weekend Saturday, while Paloma Gomez grabbed her first with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Cal State Northridge's Arpe Bagumyan. Tobita beat Denver's Maureen Slattery, 6-3, 6-4, on No. 2. Sangwan was impressive as well in her 6-2, 6-1 win over Charlotte Derbyshire in the fourth spot to pick up the ninth win of her freshman campaign. Woodson defeated Evy Van Genechten, 6-2, 6-4, on No. 5. Kluiving knocked off Morgan Barnhill, 6-3, 6-2, in the sixth singles spot, while Nasser took down Leslie Chang of Cal State Northridge, 6-1, 6-1.
What It Means: After two days of play at the Long Beach Invitational, the Ducks have posted an 18-6 overall record. Fielding its youngest team in recent memory, Oregon's freshmen are picking up valuable experience competing in a pseudo-dual format and are shining with the opportunity, going 6-0 on the weekend so far. After turning in its strongest day yet on Saturday, Oregon will look to finish strong tomorrow in order to maximize its momentum heading into the team's first dual match of the season next Saturday at No. 17 Texas Tech.
