LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Oregon women's tennis team wrapped up a successful weekend at the Long Beach Invitational Sunday with another 10-win day. After a 10-2 performance on Saturday, the Ducks repeated with a 3-1 mark in doubles and 7-1 mark in singles today.
How It Happened: The Ducks were matched up with Denver in doubles and Long Beach State in singles for Sunday's action.
Oregon started the day by taking wins on the first three doubles courts. Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita picked up their second win of the weekend as a duo with a 6-3 victory over Julia O'Loughlin and Maureen Slattery of Denver on No. 1. Oregon's tandem of Kennan Johnson and Christi Woodson handled Bianca Mok and Morgan Barnill, 6-2, on the second court, while Marlou Kluiving and Shweta Sangwan also won, 6-2, over their opponents on No. 3.
After sitting out for the fall, Rose was able to snag the first win of her sophomore season with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Maeva Razakasoa competing in the No. 1 singles spot today. On the second singles court, Johnson notched her third win of the weekend and ninth win as a Duck, shutting out Long Beach State's Ebba Unden in the match-determining tiebreaker to win, 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-6(0).
The Ducks also picked up singles wins over Long Beach State on courts four, five six, seven and eight. Shweta Sangwan was able to tally her third win of the weekend in a 7-6(3), 6-2 triumph over Hayley Thompson on No. 4. Christi Woodson, Marlou Kluiving and Daniela Nasser each won their third matches of the weekend in straight-set fashion as well. Paloma Gomez came up with her second win of the tournament, defeating Alex Jones in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
From Head Coach Alison Silverio: “Our goal for the weekend was to get better each day, and I felt we accomplished that as a team. We had a strong finish to the last day. Moving forward, we need to continue to be disciplined with our actions and trust the process.”
What It Means: Thanks to a number of solid performances throughout the weekend, the Ducks finished the Long Beach Invitational with an impressive 28-8 overall record. Oregon's success was surely a welcome sight for head coach Alison Silverio, whose young team has seemed to improve with each tournament throughout the fall season into this weekend's spring opener. The Ducks will use the momentum from this weekend when they travel south to Texas for the ITA Kickoff Weekend, their toughest test so far this season.
Up Next: The Ducks will head to Lubbock, Texas, next weekend to face No. 17 Texas Tech in the opening match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday. The Ducks will return on Sunday to play either No. 30 Virginia Tech or No. 58 Illinois.
