Ducks Drop Dual Opener to No. 17 Texas Tech
01/23/16 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Oregon women's tennis team dropped its first dual match of the season Saturday morning, falling 4-0 in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend to No. 17 Texas Tech.
How It Happened: The Red Raiders took the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Ducks Marlou Kluiving and Shweta Sangwan dropped their match 6-2 to Felicity Maltby and Sabrina Federici on No. 3. Texas Tech clinched the point when Oregon's tandem of Kennan Johnson and Christi Woodson fell to Gabriela Talaba and Sarah Dvorak 6-3 on No. 2.
Oregon's Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita were leading the 25th-ranked doubles team of Lynn Kiro and Alex Valenstein 4-2, but the match was suspended as soon as the Red Raiders clinched the doubles point.
In singles, Texas Tech bested the Ducks on courts one, five and six to win the match. Rose fell 6-2, 6-1 to 77th-ranked Talaba in the top singles spot. Woodson dropped her match 6-2, 6-3 to Tech's Federici on No. 5. The Red Raiders would clinch the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Kluiving on court six.
What It Means: Although they came up short against an experienced Texas Tech team today, the Ducks will have an opportunity to bounce back tomorrow morning against another ranked opponent in either No. 30 Virginia Tech or No. 58 Illinois. Either would be a big win for the young Oregon squad as it looks to close out the weekend strong.
Up Next: The Ducks will return to the McLeod Tennis Center on Sunday at 8 a.m. PT to face the winner of this afternoon's match between Virginia Tech and Illinois.
