01/24/16 | Men's Tennis
WACO, Texas – The 49th-ranked Oregon men's tennis team remained undefeated on the year as they downed No. 56 Old Dominion, 4-1, today as part of ITA Kickoff Weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Ducks (4-0) dropped the doubles points for the first time this year, but it didn't happen without a fight. The Monarchs (0-1) took the first doubles match at No. 3 as Bart Sawicki and Cormac Clissold fell 6-3 to Zvonimir Podvinski and Javier Jover Maestre. However, Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens pushed their match to a tiebreak, which they won 7-5 to make the deciding point come down to the No. 1 pairs.
There, Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno came back to tie it up at 6-all on the 28th-ranked duo of Aziz Kijametovic and Adam Moundir, but the Old Dominion pair would win the tiebreak 7-2 and secure the first point of the match.
That point would be the only one surrendered by Oregon and Jayson Amos quickly tied the match up at 1-all as he tallied a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4. The Ducks then grabbed the next two points handily with straight-set wins from Thomas Laurent and Simon Stevens at No. 2 and 3 respectively.
The final three matches all went to a deciding third set and Daan Maasland was the one that secured the win as he won his tiebreak 7-4 to take the match 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4).
Cormac Clissold and Ethan Young-Smith's matches at No. 5 and 6 went unfinished. The victory is Oregon's second straight win over an ITA Top-75 opponent as the Ducks swept No. 54 UC Santa Barbara last Monday at home.
QUOTES:
Head Coach Nils Schyllander:
"The guys showed great grit today. To battle back in the fashion they did, it showed me a lot about our character. There is no quit in this team."
UP NEXT: UO will face-off with fourth-ranked Baylor tomorrow at 3 p.m. CT (1 p.m. PT). The Bears won 4-1 over No. 70 UC Irvine earlier today.
