Duo Falls In Final Round To Just Miss Trip To National Indoor Championships
BERKELEY, Calif. – The doubles team of Jayson Amos and Simon Stevens fell one step short of advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championships, falling to Stanford, 6-0, 6-7 (2), 0-1 (8), in the doubles main draw finals of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Monday.
How It Happened: Playing against Stanford's Sameer Kumar and Yale Goldberg, Amos and Stevens got off to a promising start in the finals match, cruising to a 6-0 win in the opening set.
The match tightened up in the second set, and Amos and Stevens were able to battle back to bring the set to 6-6 and force a tie breaker, but Kumar and Goldberg were able to come away with the victory to even the match at a set a piece in the best-of-three finals.
In the deciding set, the Ducks got as close as match point but were unable to close things out as Kumar and Goldberg came away with the regional title.
"Simon and Jayson played their hearts out all week," said Head Coach Nils Schyllander. "They got within match point for the championship. Sometimes sports are cruel but that does not take away from these two exceptional student-athletes accomplished down in the Bay Area."
Up Next: The Ducks will have some time back in Eugene before competing in the Easley Memorial in Las Vegas, Nev., on Nov. 4-6.
