Laurent Moves On To Singles Main Draw At ITA All-Americans
10/04/16 | Men's Tennis
Tulsa, Okla. – Sophomore Thomas Laurent of the Oregon men's tennis team continued his run at the ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday, winning both of his matches in the singles qualifiers to advance to the main draw.
How It Happened: After opening the singles qualifiers with a win on Monday, Laurent went into Tuesday with the main draw in his sights. The native of Montpellier, France opened the day with an impressive 7-5, 6-4 win over Oklahoma's Spencer Papa, the 50th ranked singles player by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
After knocking off Papa, Laurent faced off with Baylor's Jimmy Bendeck with a trip to the main draw on the line. Laurent fought off Bendeck with a 7-6, 6-4 victory to advance in the tournament and keep his week in Tulsa going.
"Thomas came up big when he needed to in both matches today," said Head Coach Nils Schyllander. "He played the big points well and that is what big-time players do."
Also competing on Tuesday was senior Jayson Amos, who played in the consolation portion of the singles qualifiers after falling in his first match on Monday. Amos was unable to come out on top in his match against Georgia's Emil Reinberg, dropping a 7-5, 6-2 decision.
Up Next: Laurent will take a day in Tulsa before getting back on the court on Thursday in the singles main draw.
