Ducks Showcase Depth in 77-62 Win vs. CSU Bakersfield
11/18/16 | Women's Basketball
Ruthy Hebard and Sabrina Ionescu both post double-double in victory
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's basketball team recovered from a slow start to beat CSU Bakersfield handily, 77-62, in its second game of the season on Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: After a sluggish start that saw Oregon (2-0) go down 15-4 early to CSU Bakersfield (1-2), the Ducks ripped off a 7-0 run and then traded baskets with the Roadrunners to go into the second quarter down by just three, 20-17.
The second quarter was taken by storm by freshman Sierra Campisano, the No. 14 recruit by ESPNW, who missed the opener against Lamar. Campisano drained a three-pointer from the top of the key on her first collegiate field-goal attempt followed by a lay-in and another three from the corner to put up eight points in her first three minutes as a Duck, giving Oregon a 25-20 lead. The Ducks finished the half on a 10-4 stretch to take a 37-32 lead into the locker room.
Oregon carried its momentum from the end of the first half into the second, opening the third quarter on a 12-2 run to extend its lead to 49-36. The Roadrunners would fight back to within 11, 55-44, before the Ducks finished the quarter with six straight to take a 61-44 lead into the fourth.
The Ducks kept their foot on the gas to start the fourth, building their lead to a game-high 20 at 71-51. CSUB cut the lead to 11 before Oregon finished the game on a 6-2 run to seal the win, 77-62.
Who Stood Out: Four players finished with double-digit points for the Ducks, with freshman Ruthy Hebard leading the way scoring a game-high 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting after a big second half that saw her score 17. Freshman Sabrina Ionescu added 14 and matched Hebard with a team-high 10 rebounds, giving both freshmen their first-career double-doubles.
Campisano finished with 12 points in her impressive debut, while sophomore Maite Cazorla added 12 as well. All 14 eligible Ducks got on the floor, and Oregon finished the game shooting 43.9 percent (29-of-66). Lexi Bando, who led the Ducks with 20 points against Lamar in the opener, was held scoreless on 0-of-2 shooting.
Quoteable: "I got six post players that are, on any given day, the best we have inside and Ruthy (Hebard), guess what – she just carved herself out some more playing time. I think Jacinta (Vandenberg) is the one steady Eddie we have inside and I think it's going to continue to be that way." - Head coach Kelly Graves.
Up Next: The Ducks stay at home to continue the start of the regular season, hosting UT San Antonio at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Oregon then welcomes Michigan State to MKA on Tuesday at 8 p.m. (Pac-12 Network).
