Ducks Sprint Away from Connecticut
11/23/16 | Men's Basketball
LAHAINA, Hawaii – Oregon sprinted out to a 30-9 lead in the first nine minutes against Connecticut and went on to defeat the Huskies 79-69 Wednesday in the consolation final of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.
UConn (2-4) cut Oregon's lead to six points, 67-61 with 4:08 remaining, but the Ducks (4-2) closed the game on a 12-8 run for the 10-point win.
Chris Boucher's 19 points led four Ducks in double figures. Tyler Dorsey scored 19, Dylan Ennis added 15 and Jordan Bell had 12.
How It Happened: The Ducks posted their most efficient offensive game of the year with season highs in field goals (29), assists (18), field goal percentage (.547) and three-point field goal percentage (.429).
In that opening stretch, Dorsey had eight points, Dillon Brooks scored six and Boucher and Ennis each added five as the Ducks made 12 of their first 14 field goal attempts.
"Today definitely I thought we started off really good," said Bell. "Got the ball movement. That's what I think we really needed to do as a team, get easy shots and get everybody involved. So the first five minutes we just really passed the ball around a lot. Everybody made open shots."
The Ducks also dominated the Huskies on the board, 35-26. Bell and Ennis led the way with eight rebounds apiece.
Who Stood Out: Ennis filled the stat sheet with 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. The rebounds and assists were both season highs. Brooks came off the bench to score nine points with a season-high five assists.
Boucher and Dorsey were both 7-of-11 from the field, while Ennis was 6-of-10 and Bell was 5-of-8 as the Ducks shot better than 50 percent from the field for the first time this season.
Notes: Oregon went 2-1 in the Maui Invitational, bettering the showing of the 2008 appearance (1-2)…Boucher took over the team lead in blocks with 19 on the season, on better than Bell.
What It Means: The Ducks have a chance to go 2-1 in Maui and build some momentum heading into a stretch that finds Oregon playing its next nine games in the State of Oregon.
Quotable:
UO coach Dana Altman
"Our biggest thing offensively today, we just wanted to get some ball movement. The ball movement we've had this season's not been good. And so we went in with just a couple of things to make four or five passes before we looked for some shots. And it got our guys moving and freed us up a little bit I thought. And we had some penetration kicks for some good 3s and Tyler (Dorsey) hit, it was good to see him get some buckets down. And we had 18 assists, which was a big improvement over the tournament. So I like their ball movement much better, especially to start the game."
UO sophomore guard Tyler Dorsey
"I think obviously we still have a lot of stuff we need to work on offensively and defensively. But I think we took a step. I think every game we got a little better. The stuff we needed to work on today, we needed to move the ball. I think we did a really good job of that."
