Hebard Powers Ducks Past Pilots
12/09/16 | Women's Basketball
Ruthy Hebard had a double-double by halftime to help the Oregon women beat Portland on Friday, 81-41.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon roared back from a sluggish start on the strength of Ruthy Hebard's play in the post and a spark from the bench in the second quarter Friday, giving the UO women's basketball team an 81-41 victory over Portland before 2,316 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: The Ducks (7-1) led 10-2 early before allowing the Pilots to mount a 12-2 run into the lead. Portland eventually led 18-16 at the end of the first quarter.
The Ducks took the lead for good by scoring on their first three possessions of the second quarter, sparked by their bench. Oti Gildon rebounded a Megan Trinder miss to tie the game 18-18, Trinder hit a three-pointer on the next trip and Gildon scored off an assist from Trinder to make it 23-18.
From there, the freshman Hebard took over. She scored nine of the next 12 for the Ducks, who took a 42-28 lead into halftime. Then Hebard scored on four straight possessions early in the third quarter, as Oregon continued to extend its lead. The lead eventually reached as much as 43, on Oregon's final points of the game that made it 81-38.
Who Stood Out: Hebard had a double-double by halftime, and finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Four others scored in double figures, led by Sabrina Ionescu, who provided a typically well-rounded effort with 14 points, six assists and five rebounds. Gildon finished 5-of-5 from the floor for 10 points, and Mallory McGwire also was perfect, 4-of-4, and scored 11.
What It Means: The slow start was perhaps not unexpected after a weeklong layoff for final exams. But after generally playing their best in the third quarter so far this season, the Ducks kicked it into high gear earlier than usual, dominating the second quarter on the way to the win.
Quotable:
Head coach Kelly Graves
On his overall impressions
"I was really proud of our team tonight. I thought we played a heck of a basketball game. I thought defensively we were terrific, especially in the second half. We had a couple lulls early, but I thought overall we played well."
On the contributions of Hebard
"We knew she was really talented, but yeah, she's come along a little bit maybe quicker than we thought. This was a big jump, so we didn't know. But she's just been terrific. …. The part that surprises me the most is her ability to finish. She's doing a great job of finishing around the rim."
Junior guard Lexi Bando
On the contributions off the bench in the second quarter
"Love the depth. When you have players that can come in and make things happen and bring that spark that we need, that's really important that we keep that up."
Notable: Hebard's double-double was her third already this season. She had 23 points and 10 rebounds against Cal State-Bakersfield, and 15 points and 10 rebounds against Michigan State. … Gildon has reached double figures in back-to-back games. … Mar'Shay Moore hit her first three-pointer of the year and scored a season-high four points.
Up Next: The Ducks go on the road to play Monday at Clemson, and then Wednesday at Ole Miss.
