Ducks Clinch Series Win vs. Huskies
03/21/16 | Softball
SEATTLE, Wash. – Gwen Svekis hit two homers, including a first-inning grand slam, and the No. 7 Ducks defeated No. 8 Washington, 11-6, to clinch the series win.
Oregon improved to 22-4 (2-0 Pac-12) with the victory while the Huskies fell to 19-5 (0-2 Pac-12) with the loss. The Ducks have won nine of the last 11 meetings and each of the last four series against the rival Huskies. Oregon has won 14 straight games overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Oregon started the game with a bang, scoring six runs in the first inning. After both Jenna Lilley and Janelle Lindvall drove in runs after being hit by pitches with the bases loaded, sophomore Svekis unloaded a grand slam to clear the bases.
Starting pitcher Cheridan Hawkins struggled early, allowing three runs on two home runs in the first inning to Washington before being replaced with two outs by Geri Ann Glasco. The righty allowed three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.
The Ducks were not content with their six-run first inning, scoring two more in the third and three more in the fourth. Svekis unloaded another bomb, a two-run shot, in the third to give her six RBIs in the game. Washington walked the sophomore in her next two at-bats.
Washington scored twice with no outs in the seventh but Glasco rallied and forced a ground out to end the game.
BOX SCORE BLAST: Svekis now has three homers in the series after hitting one on Saturday and two more Sunday…Alyssa Gillespie led Oregon with three hits in Sunday's win while scoring a pair of runs... Lilley and Koral Costa each drove in two runs…Glasco improved to 6-0 on the season with the win in relief.
BIG BATS: Oregon entered the series leading the nation in batting average and slugging percentage and have backed up those numbers against the Huskies. The Ducks tallied six extra-base hits on Saturday night in the first game of the series and had six more on Sunday night. Oregon has now hit a home run in 19 straight games and has hit a double in all but one of its 26 games this year.
UP NEXT: Oregon will go for the sweep of the Huskies at 7 PM on Monday in a Pac-12 Networks televised game.
