Ducks Stumble at No. 1 Cal

How It Happened: The Ducks (11-6, 3-4 Pac-12) were unable to hand the top-ranked Golden Bears their first loss of the season Friday, as the team couldn't find an answer for Cal's experienced depth.
The Bears took the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Oregon's Paloma Gomez and Daniela Nasser fell first, dropping a 6-0 decision to Cal's Chi/Smith. The Duck duo of Marlou Kluiving and Shweta Sangwan fell, 6-3, to Fabikova and Hauger on No. 2.
The Ducks were dealt a tough hand early in singles, as sophomore Alyssa Tobita was forced to retire due to an unfortunate injury in the top singles spot, giving Cal a 2-0 lead.
Seeing her first singles dual action of the season, Paloma Gomez fell, 6-3, 6-0, to Cal's Karla Popovic on No. 6. The Bears clinched the match after freshman Daniela Nasser fell, 6-0, 6-2, on No. 5 to No. 68 Olivia Hauger.
After the match was clinched, Kluiving fell 6-4, 6-4, to 93rd-ranked Denise Starr in the fourth singles position.
Sangwan forced a third set super tiebreaker after taking the second, 7-5, but was defeated in the tiebreaker, 10-5, to give a 6-0, 5-7, 1-0(5) victory to No. 11 Klara Fabikova on No. 2. Nia Rose nearly forced a third set in her match with No. 64 Lynn Chi on No. 3, but came up short, 7-3, in the second-set-deciding tiebreaker.
