STOCKTON, Calif. – The 36th-ranked Oregon men's tennis team earned its third straight 4-0 sweep as it downed No. 66 Pacific Wednesday afternoon at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center. The Ducks are now 16-4 on the season with three matches left to play in the regular season.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The doubles decision came down to No. 1 as the Tigers and Ducks split at Nos. 2 and 3. Sem Verbeek and Alex Giannini were able to halt a seven-match winning streak by Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens, taking the match 6-3 on court two.
Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent were in danger of having their 12-match winning streak snapped as the pair sat in a 5-3 deficit. The two rallied and won four straight games to win it 7-5 and force the point to be decided on court one.
There, 31st-ranked duo, Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno, held a 5-4 advantage when Miguel Diaz and Jose Chamba were able to tie it up at 5-5. The Ducks pushed ahead to go up 6-5 before the Tigers tied it up once again at 6-6 and force the tiebreak. In the breaker, Amos and Soemarno were able to win it handily at 7-3 to clinch the point in UO's favor. The point marked the 13th straight match that the Ducks have earned the opening point in the match.
In singles, Cormac Clissold put Oregon up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 over Alex Giannnini. The UO lead then was extended to 3-0 behind a commanding victory from Ethan Young-Smith at No. 6. He won 6-0, 6-0 over Kumara Adavelly.
Thomas Laurent was able to clinch the victory with a straight-set win at No. 2. After being tied at 3-3 with Daniel Alameh in the first set, Laurent won three straight games to take it 6-3. He then dropped the opening game in the second set, but that would be the only time Alameh would lead as Laurent won the next six to take it 6-1.
At No. 3, Simon Stevens took the first set 6-4 over Jose Chamba and was leading 5-2 in the second when the match was called. Meanwhile the Tigers took the opening sets at Nos. 1 and 4, but both Daan Maasland and Jayson Amos were up in the second sets when play was halted. Maasland led 3-2 over Sem Verbeek at No. 1 while Amos was points away from forcing a third set as he led Miguel Diaz 5-2.
UP NEXT: UO will resume conference play on Friday at No. 42 Stanford at 3:30 p.m. The Ducks then close out their NorCal road trip with a contest at No. 19 California Saturday at 1 p.m.
