EUGENE, Ore. — It was a record-setting afternoon Sunday at Jane Sanders Stadium, as the No. 5 Oregon softball team completed a sweep of No. 17 Arizona with an 8-0 victory before a sellout crowd of 2,517.
UO senior Cheridan Hawkins set a school record with her 32nd career shutout, and her second of the weekend as the Ducks blanked a Pac-12 opponent in all three games for the first time since the conference went to the current scheduling format in 2010. Hawkins also won her 100th career game, tying Jess Moore's school record.
In the fourth inning, catcher Janelle Lindvall led off with a solo home run, giving her 181 career RBIs to break the UO record she shared with Kailee Cuico. Her sister, sophomore Lauren Lindvall, followed with another home run, the first time they've homered in the same game for Oregon.
How It Happened: The Ducks (38-6, 16-2 Pac-12) took the lead in the first thanks to two errors, the first of which allowed Alyssa Gillespie to reach and the second of which allowed her to score. The back-to-back bombs by the Lindvalls led off the fourth, and Gwen Svekies followed with a single before ultimately coming home on a wild pitch.
The Wildcats (32-17, 9-9) managed only a second-inning single, on which UO shortstop Nikki Udria very nearly made a diving catch before having the ball pop out of her glove. Hawkins retired the next eight in order, and finished her two starts for the weekend allowing just four baserunners.
Oregon ended it in the fifth. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with two out, and Jenna Lilley drove a triple to the gap that glanced off the right fielder's glove. Three straight walks followed the triple, the last of which brought Lilley home to end the game.
Notable: Hawkins broke the career shutouts record she tied Friday, previously set by Katie Wiese (1989-90). … Hawkins pitched back-to-back shutouts for the first time in more than a year. She blanked UCLA and Arizona State in consecutive starts last April. … Around 50 former UO players were recognized prior to first pitch, as part of the program's alumni weekend.
Up Next: The Ducks host Utah Valley in a doubleheader Tuesday at 4 p.m., before resuming Pac-12 play Friday at California.
