Freshman Amy Matsuoka Shines In Final Round As Oregon Finishes 26-Over At Red Raider Invitational
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Oregon women's golf team opened its 2016-17 season with a third place finish in the Red Raider Invitational after shooting 11-over in the final round on Tuesday at The Rawls Course.
Â
How It Happened: Oregon's 11-over day solidified a third-place finish at 26-over for the tournament, just one stroke behind host Texas Tech. New Mexico State was 7-over on Tuesday to win the Red Raider Invitational at 16-over.
Â
The Ducks were led by a tremendous day from freshman Amy Matsuoka, who overcame three early bogies to shoot 3-under over the final 14 holes and finish the round with an even-par 72. Matsuoka was 2-under on the back-nine, and added a birdie on No. 1 before finishing her round with a par on the par-five second. The Newport Beach, Calif. native finished her first collegiate tournament 6-over across three rounds, tied for 10th in the field, and was 2-over in her final two rounds.
Â
Joining Matsuoka in a tie for 10th at 6-over was sophomore Petra Salko, who recorded her highest career-finish after shooting 4-over on Tuesday. Salko was 1-under for her round through 11 holes before five bogies over the final 11 pushed her down the leaderboard. Salko's weekend was highlighted by a 2-under performance in the second round on Monday.
Â
Sophomore Kathleen Scavo was not quite as effective on Tuesday as she was Monday, when she went 1-over in both the first and second rounds. Scavo fired a 5-over 77 on Tuesday to put her tournament total at 7-over, good for a tie for 15th. The native of Benicia, Calif. started her round strong with a birdie on No. 1 on Tuesday, but a bogey on No. 4 and a double on No. 5 led to a 4-over front-nine. Scavo finished the day strong, going 1-over on the back-nine.
Â
Senior Cathleen Santoso, fresh off a hole-in-one on Monday, finished in 21st with a mark of 9-over for the event after shooting 4-over in Tuesday's final round. Outside of a triple bogey on the par-five ninth, Santoso was 1-over for the day and 1-under on the back-nine.
Â
Freshman Brooke Hamilton put a rough first round behind her to shoot 3-over on Tuesday after a 4-over in Monday's second round. Hamilton was even across the back-nine in the final round, but two bogeys and a double on the back hurt her final mark. Hamilton finished her first collegiate tournament 16-over in a tie for 39th out of the field of 75.
Â
Notable: Oregon led the tournament on par-3s with an average score of 3.18, shooting 11-over on those holes … The Ducks finished with 36 birdies, the second-most behind host Texas Tech … Oregon's two eagles, one by Salko and Santoso's ace, were tied for the most with NMSU … Salko was 1-under on par-3s, while Hamilton was 3-under on par-5s.
