Oregon Shoots 7-Over Across 36 Holes To Set Up Match Play Showdown With Buckeyes
Ann Arbor, Mich. – The Oregon women's golf team came away with a fourth-place finish in the stroke play portion of the East and West Match Play Challenge on Sunday at Radrick Farms Golf Course, setting up a match play showdown with Ohio State on Monday.
How It Happened: The Ducks came out with a strong showing over the first 18 holes on Sunday, leading the field with a 1-over 289 going into the second round. The final 18 holes were not as kind to Oregon, as it posted a 6-over 294 to finish at 7-over for the day, one stroke behind third-place Wisconsin. Kentucky finished second at 2-over, while Ohio State led the field at 1-under.
Freshman Amy Matsuoka and sophomore Petra Salko were the low scorers of the day for the Ducks, both finishing 2-over across the 36 holes, tied for eighth on the individual leaderboard. Matsuoka, playing No. 1 after a top-10 finish in her first career event at the Red Raider Invitational last weekend, came out strong with a 1-under 71 in the first round of the day. The Newport Beach, Calif. native started strong in the second round, playing par golf across the first 12 holes, before three bogeys in her final six holes dropped her to 3-over for the round. Salko had an opposite experience, shooting 3-over in the first round before coming out with a strong 1-under second round. Salko was 2-under over the final 14 holes to shoot up the board, picking up a birdie on No. 15 before closing out her round with a birdie on the par-5 first hole.
Finishing one stroke behind Matsuoka and Salko was freshman Brooke Hamilton and senior Cathleen Santoso, who both shot 3-over on the day to finish in a tie for 13th. Hamilton was fairly consistent all day long, firing a 2-over 74 in the first round before coming back with a 1-over 73 in the second. Hamilton had five birdies on the day and bogeyed back-to-back holes just once. Santoso got off to a strong start with a 1-under 71 in the opening round, but a 4-over 76 in the second round raised her score. Santoso battled through six bogeys in the second round, adding a pair of birdies, to keep her overall score at a very respectable 3-over.
Sophomore Kathleen Scavo also played fairly consistently all day, shooting 1-over in the first round and 3-over in the second round to finish tied for 17th at 4-over. Scavo got off to a great start with three birdies in her first five holes in the first round, but struggled to finish strong in the second round with five bogeys over her final eight holes.
Playing as an individual, freshman Daniele Giles got her first taste of collegiate competition on Sunday. The native of Talent. Ore. opened her collegiate career with a 6-over 78 in the first round, and followed that up with a 7-over 79 to finish 13-over on the day. Giles had two birdies over the two rounds and played par golf over the front nine of her second round with nine pars.
