Oregon Takes Second Place At East-West Challenge
09/20/16 | Women's Golf
Two Late Birdies By Kathleen Scavo Brought The Deciding Point To The 18th Hole, But Wisconsin Came Away With A 3-2 Win
Ann Arbor, Mich. – The Oregon women's golf team took Wisconsin down to the final hole in the championship round of the East and West Match Play Challenge, but ultimately fell, 3-2, to come away with second place in the tournament on Tuesday at Radrick Farms Golf Course.
How It Happened: With the two teams knotted up at two points each, the match came down to Oregon sophomore Kathleen Scavo and Wisconsin's Nat Zeng. Trailing by two holes through No. 15, Scavo birdied each of the next two holes to pull all square with Zeng and send the match to the 18th hole with the deciding point on the line. Scavo found the middle of the fairway on her drive on No. 18, but pulled her second shot left into a greenside bunker and was unable to get up and down for par. Zeng made the green on two shots and two-putted to give the Badgers the tournament win.
Senior Cathleen Santoso put on a dominating performance to lead the Ducks to the first of their two points, needing just 13 holes to beat Wisconsin's Tess Hackworthy, 7&5. Freshman Amy Matsuoka continued her impressive start to her collegiate career, beating the Badgers' Becky Klongland, 4&3, to give Oregon its second point and a chance at the win.
Wisconsin's Brooke Ferrell beat Petra Salko, 2&1, in a match that was close all day long, and Gabby Curtis beat Brooke Hamilton, 4&3, to help secure the Badger victory.
What It Means: The Ducks have opened their fall season with back-to-back top-three finishes, taking second in Ann Arbor after finishing third last weekend at the Red Raider Invitational. Matsuoka has been an extremely encouraging sign through her first two collegiate tournaments, finishing in a tie for 10th at the Red Raider, and winning both of her matches in the East-West Challenge after finishing tied for eighth in the 36-hole stroke-play portion at 2-over. The Ducks' depth is apparent early on in the fall as they make their march toward the NCAA Championships in the spring.

On the team through two tournaments…
"The biggest takeaway is that we've all got game. We learned from our mistakes last week and noticed where we could make significant improvements. That's all we can do each tournament, to just continue using it as a learning experience. We're ultimately trying to prepare ourselves to compete for a national championship."
Up Next: The Ducks will take some time back in Eugene before heading to Chicago, Ill. for the Windy City Challenge on Oct. 3-4.
