EUGENE, Ore. — For the third time in four games, the Oregon women's basketball team rallied back from a halftime deficit to win Friday night, as the Ducks defeated Colorado, 71-66, before 2,260 in Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: The Ducks (13-6, 3-4 Pac-12) trailed at halftime for the seventh time in seven Pac-12 games so far this season. The Buffaloes (11-7, 1-6) led 11-10 after the first quarter, and 31-29 at the half.
The UO women had 10 turnovers at halftime, and committed two more early in the third quarter as Colorado took a 36-33 lead. But from there the Ducks tightened up their play at both ends and went to freshman phenom Ruthy Hebard in the low block, as Hebard scored nine points during an 11-0 run to a 44-36 Oregon lead.
Colorado stayed in the game with the three-point shot, making one late in the third quarter to stay within 49-45, and then four more in the final quarter to remain a threat. But with the Ducks up 68-64 after a baseline jumper by Jacinta Vandenberg, the UO senior post came up with a huge defensive rebounds with 27 seconds left and the Ducks held on.
Who Stood Out: Hebard led the Ducks with 19 points and 11 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the season. Maite Cazorla added 14 points with six assists, Sabrina Ionescu had eight points, six assists and five rebounds, and Vandenberg scored a season-high nine points while grabbing six rebounds. Along with the baseline jumper, Vandenberg hit a hook shot as the shot clock was expiring for a 64-59 Oregon lead.
What It Means: The Ducks have proven to be an incredibly resilient bunch, rallying to win three of four after an 0-3 start to conference play, and winning all three after trailing at the half.
Quotable:
Kelly Graves, head coach
On Oregon's play overall
"I liked how we responded in the second half. Took care of the ball a little better, got the basketball inside and started to dominate a little bit on the inside. A really, really good win. It wasn't always pretty, but in the end it was effective."
On Vandenberg's rare offensive outburst
"Jacinta was really, really good tonight. It was one of the best games she's played for us all year, and it was good to see. Not only did she defend and rebound, which she always does, she scored."
Notable: Oregon improved to 4-0 this season in games decided by six points or less. … The Ducks had 11 of 14 players available for Friday's game. Along with Lydia Giomi (hand) and Megan Triner (knee), senior guard Mar'Shay Moore was not in uniform due to illness. … Colorado's first-year staff includes former UO assistant Shandrika Lee.
Up Next: The Ducks host Utah in Matthew Knight Arena on Sunday (1 p.m., Pac-12).
