Ducks Open Spring With Win Over Montana State
01/22/17 | Men's Tennis
OREGON WILL FACE UTAH STATE AT 3PM IN BACK END OF DOUBLEHEADER AT STUDENT TENNIS CENTER
EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon men's tennis team opened its 2017 spring season with a 5-0 win over Montana State on Sunday morning at the Student Tennis Center.
How It Happened: The Ducks (1-0) jumped on the Bobcats (1-2) from the start of the match, quickly claiming the doubles point. Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno, the No. 9-ranked doubles pair in the preseason ITA rankings, took down Montana State's Rok Sitar and Alexander Flink, 6-2, to kick off the match. Thomas Laurent and Cormac Clissold secured the point for the Ducks with a 6-2 decision over Kellen Bates and Adrian Torrico.
Tanaka kept things rolling for the Ducks in singles, picking up a point quickly with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Flink to give Oregon its second point of the match. Ethan Young-Smith, a last-minute entry into the lineup, rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Petrak to give the Ducks a commanding 3-0 win, and the 33rd-ranked Laurent secured a 6-4, 6-1 win over Bates to clinch the match for the Ducks. Amos finished his match almost simultaneously with Laurent to give the Ducks an additional point, beating Torrico, 6-3, 6-0. Stevens and Ty Gentry were both up in their matches, but were unable to finish after the Ducks clinched the win.
What it Means: The Ducks opened the spring strong, cruising to a win in the first part of Sunday's doubleheader. Young-Smith was subbed in for Clissold in singles just before the start of play as the Ducks look for the best combinations and match-ups as the spring gets into full-swing.
Up Next: The Ducks will have a short break before facing Utah State (2-2) at the Student Tennis Center at 3 p.m.
