Ducks Fall Short After Gritty Effort
01/27/17 | Women's Basketball
Oregon fought into a fourth-quarter lead in a defensive battle with No. 11 Oregon State before losing Friday, 43-40.
EUGENE, Ore. — Down 10 late in the third quarter, the Oregon women fought back into the lead midway through the fourth before falling 43-40 to No. 11 Oregon State on Friday night, the Beavers' 12th straight Civil War win. The game was played before 4,370 fans, the third-largest crowd for a women's game in Matthew Knight Arena, and including a program-record 572 students.
How It Happened: The game was a defensive struggle most of the night, but for one crucial lapse by the Ducks (14-7, 4-5 Pac-12). Oregon State (19-2, 8-1) made 8-of-13 shots to open the third quarter, climbing back from a 17-13 halftime deficit to take a 31-23 lead.
The UO women, who have won three times in Pac-12 play after trailing at halftime, were typically gritty in the fourth quarter Friday. Down 36-29, they scored eight straight to charge into the lead. Sabrina Ionescu shook a defender at the three-point line with a pump fake before stepping inside the arc for a jump shot that put the Ducks up, 37-36.
But the Beavers answered with six straight points to go ahead 42-37. Oregon got within two on a Lexi Bando three-pointer, and got the ball back down 42-40 with 12.1 seconds left. But a Maite Cazorla pass to Jacinta Vandenberg was tipped by a defender, and Cazorla was unable to corral the loose ball after it caromed back to her. The Beavers made a free throw at the other end to ice it.
Oregon's halftime lead was its second straight in the series. It came after a defensive grind of a half, in which the teams combined to shoot 13-of-57 — 5-of-28 in the second quarter. Oregon missed nine straight at one point in the second quarter, with OSU taking its only lead of the half, at 13-12.
Who Stood Out: Ionescu led all scorers with 14 points, on 5-of-15 shooting. Cazorla added 12, including six early in the fourth quarter as the Ducks fought back into the lead. She also drew the defensive assignment against OSU leading scorer Sydney Wiese, who was held to 12 points. But Oregon struggled in the post, where starters Ruthy Hebard and Mallory McGwire and backup Vandenberg combined to shoot just 3-of-18.
What It Means: The Ducks came away encouraged by their defensive effort, and optimistic about their chances to steal one in Corvallis when the two teams meet again Sunday morning.

Kelly Graves, head coach
On his thoughts overall
"I thought we played extremely hard — as hard as any team I've coached here. It was just a tough, physical game, both ends of the floor. Neither team played particularly pretty offensively, but both teams defended really well. I thought the third quarter really hurt us. We lacked focus defensively, especially early on, and that really hurt us."
On trying to close the gap with OSU
"Against a legit Final Four contender, you've got to play 40 minutes. You can't play 36, 37 minutes. And unfortunately that hurt us right there. But I'm relay proud of our team. This was a young team that grew up a little bit tonight. … It just goes to show you, we're this close. But we've still got to climb a little bit more."
Sabrina Ionescu, freshman guard
On having a rematch Sunday
"We're excited. It's another game, another great opportunity for us to come out and compete. We have another opportunity to come out and compete and win."
Notable: Oregon had been 4-0 this season in games decided by six points or less. … New UO football coach Willie Taggart sat courtside in the first half, and was introduced to the Matt Court crowd during a timeout. … Mar'Shay Moore was in uniform but did not play for the third straight game, after not suiting up in either game last week due to illness. … Megan Trinder was on crutches after undergoing season-ending knee surgery earlier in the week.
Up Next: Rivalry week in the Civil War series continues in Corvallis on Sunday (11 a.m., ESPNU).
