Xiong Goes Low in Opening Round
10/01/17 | Men's Golf
PORTLAND, Ore. – Norman Xiong shot a 6-under par 65 in the first round of the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club on Sunday. Xiong sits in a tie for second place and led the way for Oregon which finished the day 4-over par as a team and in 13th place.
How it Happened: Coming off of an uncharacteristic 42nd place finish at the Trinity Forest Invitational last week, Xiong bounced back nicely matching a season-low with his opening round 65. He bogeyed the first hole before catching fire as he made the turn, making birdie on holes seven through 11 to reach 5-under par. Xiong birdied hole 17 to get to 6-under as he shot a bogey-free 32 on the back nine.
Ryan Gronlund had an up and down day as he made four birdies and four bogeys to shoot an even-par 71. Edwin Yi added a 1-over par 72 to the Ducks' scorecard, making birdie on the closing hole to get back to 1-over after dropping to 2-over through 15 holes.
Kevin Geniza and Donald Kay both struggled to get on track, with Geniza shooting a 9-over par 80 and Kay an 11-over par 82 to round out the scoring for the Ducks.
What it Means: Xiong is one shot behind round one leader Blaine Hale of Oklahoma who shot a 7-under par 64. This is the third time Xiong has shot in the 60s in an opening round in his career; the previous two times he has gone on to claim medalist honors. The Ducks are 16 shots off the opening round lead held by Oklahoma at 12-under par.
