Ducks Drop Second Straight At Stanford
10/14/17 | Football
Oregon lost for the second time since quarterback Justin Herbert's injury, falling Saturday at Stanford.
How It Happened: The Ducks (4-3, 1-3 Pac-12) lost their second straight game without starting quarterback Justin Herbert. Braxton Burmeister got the start and was 2-of-6 for 15 yards with two interceptions before being replaced in the second half by Taylor Alie.
Oregon's defense started slow, with Stanford running back Bryce Love rushing 34 yards on his first touch to set up the Cardinal's first touchdown on the opening possession. Love then raced 67 yards on a one-play touchdown drive to put Stanford up 14-0. The Ducks rallied to within 14-7 on a Burmeister rushing touchdown, but the Cardinal drove to another touchdown for a 21-7 lead, then blocked a punt and recovered it for another touchdown and a 28-7 halftime advantage.
Keller Chryst's second passing touchdown of the night put Stanford ahead 35-7 in the third quarter. Chryst added a third TD pass in the fourth quarter, before giving way to backup K.J. Costello, who added a final touchdown pass with 3:03 left in the game.
Who Stood Out: Royce Freeman rushed 18 times for 143 yards. Freeman moved to 4,943 career rushing yards, passing Marcus Allen (USC, 1978-81) for fourth in Pac-12 history. In third with 5,044 yards is Ken Simonton (OSU, 1998-2001). It was the 26th 100-yard rushing game of Freeman's career, tying him with LaMichael James for first in UO history.
The two big plays by Love belied what overall was a solid effort by Oregon's rush defense. The Ducks went big for the game, moving end Jalen Jelks out to linebacker and inserting Scott Pagano into the lineup at end. They also used nose guard Austin Faoliu at end, and in goal-line situations went with a heavy four-lineman, four-linebacker package. Love had 115 yards on his first five carries, and 32 yards on his last 12 carries.
What It Means: Oregon continues to look for answers on offense since the injury to Herbert. The Ducks are two wins shy of reaching bowl eligibility, with five chances left this regular season.
Quotable:
Willie Taggart, UO head coach
On Oregon's quarterback play
"We knew we couldn't turn the ball over and beat this football team. We turned it over a couple times early, and I think (Burmeister) was shook a little bit. ... The kid had a good week of practice. He just came out and didn't have the game we wanted."
On trying to contain Love
"We knew we were going up against a really good back. We knew we had to gang-tackle, and we didn't do a good job of that in the first quarter. In the second quarter, we got better."
On Herbert's status
"He's healing and rehabbing. Hopefully he'll heal soon."
Notable: Receivers Charles Nelson and Dillon Mitchell returned from injuries to start the game. … Offensive linemen Tyrell Crosby and Jake Pisarcik were injured in the first half and didn't return. Running back Tony Brooks-James had to be helped off the field in the second half, and Taggart said postgame all three showed concussion symptoms. … Saturday's game was briefly interrupted when a rabbit began running loose on the field. It was eventually corralled on the UO sideline by players. … The blocked punt for a touchdown was the first against Oregon since 2005, also by Stanford.
Up Next: The Ducks remain on the road to play at UCLA on Saturday (1 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
