Roman Sorkin scored a career-high 23 points to propel Oregon to a 70-54 win over Coppin State on opening night
EUGENE, Ore. – In his first career start, senior Roman Sorkin scored a career-high 23 points to propel Oregon to a 70-54 win over Coppin State in the season-opener Friday at Matthew Knight Arena in front of 7,232 fans.
How it Happened: The Ducks (1-0) clamped down defensively in the first half, forcing the Eagles (0-1) to miss their first nine shots from the field. Oregon held Coppin State to just 4-of-28 shooting in the first half and 2-of-13 shooting from three-point range.
Sorkin and freshman Troy Brown paced the Ducks offensively in the first half. The two combined for 30 of Oregon's first half points as the Ducks led 42-14 at the break.
Coppin State battled back in the second half, cutting the Ducks' lead to as little as 10 with 2:40 left to play and outscored Oregon 40-28 after halftime.
Payton Pritchard was perfect from the field in the second half shooting 3-for-3, scoring seven of his 10 points to give the Ducks enough offense to secure the win.
Who Stood Out: In addition to his 23 points, Sorkin grabbed seven rebounds and shot 8-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from three-point range. Brown added 18 points and five rebounds on 6-of-12 shooting and Pritchard scored 10 points and matched a career-high with eight rebounds.
Quotable:
Dana Altman, Head Coach
On how they can make improvements defensively…
"The mentality has to change. Our discipline and our attention to detail needs to be better. So we've got a lot of work to do on the defensive end just to get our rotations down."
On the play of Roman Sorkin…
"He hit some shots tonight. He moved and took the shots he wanted to take, his feet were right, his balance was really good and he did score very well."
Notable: The Ducks extended their home winning streak to a nation-best 43 games … The win gave Oregon its 20th consecutive home-opening win and 20th straight home non-conference victory … Altman is just two wins away from reaching 600 career wins … The Ducks improved to 52-2 all-time in non-conference games at MKA.
Up Next: The Ducks are back at it on Monday at 6 p.m. against Prairie View A&M on Pac-12 Networks.
