The Men and Women of Oregon cross country will run for the ultimate prize this Saturday at the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Ky.
EUGENE, Ore. – The Men and Women of Oregon cross country will run for the ultimate prize this Saturday at the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Ky., at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park.
The national meet will begin at 6:00 a.m. PT with the women's 6,000-meter championship race, and will conclude at 7:00 a.m. with the men's 10,000-meter national title race.
Both the UO men and women earned at-large bids to the NCAA Championships after putting together impressive bodies of work throughout the season.
The Women of Oregon will be among the top teams contending for the national title Saturday after placing in the top three in all four meets this season, including a win in the Pre-Nationals Invitational on the same 6,000-meter course they will run Saturday. The Ducks will look to Katie Rainsberger to once again be the low stick Saturday, as the standout sophomore has finished in the top five in all four of her meets this year, including a fourth-place finish in Louisville.
The UO men have been in the top four in all their meets this year, and they were third at the Pre-Nationals Invitational last month in Louisville. The Ducks' main focus this season has been pack running, and that will again be imperative in a packed field as they try to work their way onto the podium.
The Women of Oregon head to Louisville looking to defend last season's national title and build upon last year's magical Triple Crown run, while the Men of Oregon get set to run their first national meet since 2012 without Edward Cheserek. Speaking of 2012, the Women of Oregon brought home the national title that year when the national meet was held in Louisville.
Each team will be allowed seven runners. The Men of Oregon will enter nine runners initially and then will cut down to seven come race time, while the Women of Oregon will go to Louisville with eight runners entered before trimming down to seven.
