Laurent's Singles Run Ends While Ducks Sweep Day Two Of Gopher Invite
11/04/17 | Men's Tennis
The Ducks continued their impressive run at the Gopher Invitational Saturday, while Thomas Laurent's singles run at the ITA Fall National Championships ended in the semifinals.
How It Happened: Laurent drew a difficult task in his semifinal match going against the No. 3 ranked player in the country Petros Chrysochos from Wake Forest.
The French international fought hard, but Chrysochos proved why he is one of the top-ranked players in the country winning, 6-2, 6-2, to end Laurent's championship bid.
Laurent closed the day with a come-from-behind doubles victory with partner Cormac Clissold over the 55th-ranked pair of Matic Spec and Felix Corwin of Minnesota, 1-6, 7-6(5), 10-8.
At the Gopher Invitational, the Ducks continued their stellar run winning all 10 of their matches on the day.
Senior Simon Stevens and Sophomore Ty Gentry opened the day with singles wins against their Notre Dame opponents. Stevens downed Grayson Broadus, 6-2, 6-0, while Gentry got the best of Richard Ciamarra, 6-4, 6-3.
Senior Akihiro Tanaka and junior Ethan Young-Smith picked up straight-set wins to open the day as well. Young-Smith kept UO's perfect start to the day intact with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Utah's Chase Stoner. Tanaka was pushed into a tiebreaker against Utah's Santiago Sierra, but managed to pull out the straight-set win, 6-4, 7-6(6).
In the maroon draw semifinals, Stevens and Gentry paired together to take down Dartmouth's Roko Glasnovic and David Horneffer in doubles play, 6-3. In singles play, Stevens picked up a straight-set win, 6-4, 6-3, over Horneffer while Gentry rallied to win after dropping the opening set, 5-7, 6-3 (10-2), against Glasnovic.
Tanaka and Young-Smith completed the match sweep for the Ducks in the third round of the gold draw downing Denver's Wyatt Lovera and Ignatius Castellino in doubles play, 6-1. Tanaka and Young-Smith picked up singles wins over their Pioneer opponents, 6-0, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-4, respectively.

On Laurent's singles tournament run...
"Tom's performance at the [ITA Fall National Championships] is nothing short of remarkable. When you put yourself in the mix for a national championship, competing against the best of the best and almost reaching the finish line, a lot of credit is due. It shows that hard work pays off."
On Clissold and Laurent reaching the consolation bracket semifinals...
"I'm very happy for Cormac and Tom reaching the doubles consolation finals tomorrow. After back-to-back wins over nationally ranked opponents, they have really stepped it up."
Up Next: The Ducks close out their fall season Sunday as Laurent and Clissold take on Oliver Crawford and Chase Perez-Blanco of Florida in the consolation doubles finals tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT. The rest of the Ducks look to close out the Gopher Invitational on a high note at 6 a.m. PT.
