OREGON KEEPS ITS OPPONENT OFF THE SCOREBOARD FOR THE THIRD STRAIGHT MATCH; WILL FACE IOWA AT 2 PM ON SATURDAY TO CLOSE OUT WEEK
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team won its third straight match and improved to 6-1 to start the spring with a 7-0 win over Nebraska on Friday night at the Student Tennis Center.
How it Happened: The Ducks (6-1) had to battle to win the doubles point after Nebraska (0-4) jumped out to early leads on all three courts. The 33rd-ranked duo of Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent rebounded from dropping the first set to run away with a 6-2 win on No. 2, and Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry rallied on the third court for a 6-4 victory to claim the point for the Ducks.
Gentry, a freshman, carried the momentum from the doubles win into singles at the No. 6 spot, and took advantage of his chance in the lineup by cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory for the first dual-match singles win of his collegiate career.
Amos claimed the third point for the Ducks with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3, and the 124th-ranked Stevens clinched the win for Oregon with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the second spot.
Finishing out the match, No. 38 Laurent continued his success in singles at the top spot by winning, 6-2, 6-2, and junior Akihiro Tanaka improved to 5-1 in dual matches with a 6-2, 6-4 win. Clissold closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5.
With the win, the Ducks have not allowed their opponents to put a team point up on the scoreboard since falling to No. 9 Texas in the Austin regional final of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the end of January.
Notable: Amos moved into a tie for second in UO history with his 84th career singles win, and is now only six shy of the all-time record … Laurent improved to 35-8 in singles in his career, 16-2 this season and 10-0 in his career at No. 1 singles … Clissold and Laurent continued to dominate in doubles, improving to 11-2 together this season and 26-3 (.897) all-time. The pair's 26 wins are now tied for ninth in UO history … Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno, ranked 51st in the country, were tied, 5-5, at No. 1 doubles when the Ducks clinched the point.
Up Next: The Ducks will compete a stretch of three home matches in three days when they face Iowa on Saturday at 2 p.m.
