STANFORD, Calif. - The Oregon women's golf team sits in second place in the 12-team field after shooting an 8-over 292 in the first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational on Saturday at Stanford Golf Course.
The Ducks are within striking distance going into Sunday's final round; they are only six strokes behind Stanford, the host school and top-ranked team in the country.
How it Happened: Playing in their first tournament of the spring, the Ducks received good opening rounds up and down the lineup. Kelsey Ulep led Oregon with an impressive start to her junior season after not competing in the fall, shooting an even-par 71 to sit in a tie for third going into Sunday's final round. Ulep is currently four strokes behind day-one leader Andrea Lee (Stanford), the No. 3-ranked player in the country.
Sophomore Kathleen Scavo picked up where she left off after a strong finish to the fall, firing a 1-over 72 after starting 3-under across her first nine holes. Scavo is currently tied for ninth in the field.
Freshman Amy Matsuoka overcame a pair of bogeys in her first five holes to finish 1-over on the front nine and 3-over (74) for the day to go into the final round in a tie for 15th. Senior Cathleen Santoso endured an up-and-down day to shoot a 4-over 75 (T20th), and sophomore Petra Salko rounded out the lineup one stroke behind with a 5-over 76.
Notable: The Ducks were second in the field with 12 total birdies in the opening round, with Matsuoka, Scavo and Ulep each picking up three … Ulep led the Ducks with 12 total pars.
