Oregon finishes opening week of 2017 season unscathed
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 9 ranked Oregon softball team capped off a successful run at the Kajikawa Classic, defeating Cal Poly, 3-1, on Sunday morning.
UO's win over the previously unbeaten Mustangs (4-1) ran the Ducks' record to 6-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED: As was the case in Saturday's win over Seattle, the Ducks scored early and then rode the dominant relief pitching of freshman Maggie Balint (4-0) to a tight, two-run victory.
Jenna Lilley had the game's key hit, a two-run single in the top of the third that provided the Ducks with all the runs they would ultimately need before Balint nailed down the W with four innings of two-hit relief.
Alexis Mack drove home UO's third run with a base hit in the fifth off Cal Poly starter Sierra Hyland (3-1). The Mustangs' senior ace had not not allowed an earned run on the season prior to Sunday and had already tossed a no-hitter and a five-inning perfect game in three previous decisions this year.
The Mustangs made it interesting by scratching for an unearned run and loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh before Balint coaxed a foul out to Lilley outside of third base for the game's final out.
IN THE CIRCLE: Veteran right-hander Megan Kleist started and went three innings before exiting with two runners on and no outs in the bottom of the fourth. She allowed no runs on two hits and struck out one. Balint struck out the side after entering in the fourth and finished with seven strikeouts in her four innings. The righty, who ended up recording the win in UO's final three games of the tourney, allowed two hits and walked a pair.
AT THE PLATE: Lilley, Mack and Danica Mercado accounted for all six of the Ducks' hits on the day. All three batters finished 2-for-3 with Mercado scoring two of UO's three runs.
BACK ON BASE: Mack is the only Duck to reach base safely in all six games this season.
STREAKS END: Nikki Udria and Mia Camuso both saw their team-best, five-game hitting streaks come to an end.
UP NEXT: The Ducks are off until Friday, when they face Kentucky in Cathedral City, Calif. at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 PM PT.
