Home Finale In One Word: Perfect
02/18/17 | Men's Basketball
Oregon smashed Colorado, 101-73, on Saturday to go unbeaten in Matthew Knight Arena for the second straight season.
EUGENE, Ore. — Seniors Chris Boucher and Dylan Ennis wrapped up their two-year UO careers unbeaten at Matthew Knight Arena on Saturday, when the No. 7 Oregon men's basketball team broke open the game in the second half to beat Colorado, 101-73, before a sellout crowd of 12,364. The Ducks won their NCAA-leading 42nd straight home game, including all 35 during the careers of Boucher and Ennis.
How It Happened: Boucher and Ennis combined for 38 points on an afternoon when the Ducks (24-4, 13-2 Pac-12) broke open the game with a 29-2 run spanning halftime. The Buffaloes (16-12, 6-9) hit a three-pointer to get within 35-32 late in the first half, but the Ducks closed the half with 10 straight points, then opened the second with a 19-2 run to avenge their loss in Boulder earlier this season.
Pac-12 player of the year candidate Dillon Brooks scored a game-high 23, including 10 straight Oregon points as the Ducks jumped out to an early 21-19 lead. Colorado fought back to a 25-23 advantage before the Ducks scored on six straight possessions to go up 35-27, a stretch that included a breakaway windmill slam dunk off a steal by Jordan Bell.
As was the case Thursday against Utah, the Ducks turned the second-half Saturday into a chance to fatten their highlight reel. Boucher had a dunk off a Brooks steal to make it 57-34, and Boucher completed a three-point play for a 72-41 lead after Payton Pritchard put a defender on his back by crossing him over in the backcourt. The Ducks passed the 100-point mark on a three-pointer by Evan Gross, a practice player who made his UO debut against the Utes.
Who Stood Out: Along with the individuals, Oregon's effort on the defensive glass stood out. Utah had 14 offensive rebounds Thursday, and turned them into 19 second-chance points, which was UO coach Dana Altman's biggest criticism following that game. On Saturday, the Buffs had just seven offensive rebounds and six second-chance points — and just two second-chance points until falling behind by 30 in the second half, 67-37.
What It Means: The Ducks enjoyed a rousing Senior Day performance, capped by a postgame sendoff for Ennis, Boucher and Charlie Noebel, along with manager Patrick Benson.
Quotable:
Dana Altman, head coach
On the sendoff for the seniors
"I felt really good for Chris; he really played with a lot of energy, a lot of focus. Dylan Ennis got it going offensively in the first half; wish we could have gotten Charlie a bucket there. But other than that, a lot of good things."
Chris Boucher, senior post
To the crowd during the postgame ceremony
"You made my life a movie, honestly. … Sometimes when we were playing, I felt like we were 10 against five because of you all. Y'all always gave us energy, whether we were up or down."
Dylan Ennis, senior guard
On finishing his home career on a high note
"It was great. Our last game at Matthew Knight, I couldn't predict we'd have a game like that, being our last game. But it was a great way to end here."
Chalie Noebel, walk-on senior guard
On whether he expected to play in his home finale
"No, honestly I didn't. They played us tough for the first (few) minutes. They had the lead for a little bit, and I thought it was going to be a 40-minute fight. I told these guys, let's try to get some stops so I can get in there. We definitely picked it up on defense, and that's what got me in.
Notable: Brooks moved into 15th on the UO career scoring list with 1,418 points, passing Luke Ridnour (1,399/2000-03). … Bell's blocked shot was No. 207 of his career, tying him for sixth in Pac-12 history with Michael Stewart of California (1999-2002). … It was Oregon's first 100-point game in a league contest since beating Washington State 115-77 at McArthur Court on Feb. 21, 2002. ... Oregon's average season attendance of 9,895 was the programs best in 39 years (1977-78/9,984). ... The Ducks wore a patch on their pregame shooting shirts bearing the initials of former UO standout Greg Ballard, who passed away last fall. … Former UO track and field standouts and Olympic medalists Ashton Eaton and Brianne Thiesen-Eaton were recognized at midcourt during a first-half timeout. … Kenjon Barner, the former UO running back now playing in the NFL, sat baseline for the game, while Dennis Dixon and Garren Strong sat near midcourt.
Up Next: The Ducks kick off a three-game road trip that concludes the regular season at California on Wednesday (6 p.m., ESPN2).
