PETRA SALKO LEADS WITH +1 73 IN OPENING ROUND; SECOND ROUND TO BEGIN AT 7 AM PT ON MONDAY
NEW ORLEANS - The Oregon women's golf team opened the 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championships on Sunday with a 10-over 298 in the first round at English Turn Golf and Country Club.
How it Happened: Coming off a second-place finish at the Peg Barnard Invitational last weekend, the Ducks endured an up-and-down first day to begin the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.
Sophomore Petra Salko rebounded from two bogeys in her first three Ducks to finish with three birdies and lead the Ducks with a 1-over 73. Salko sits in a tie for 20th overall going into Monday's second round.
Freshman Amy Matsuoka fired a 2-over 74 to open the tournament and is in a tie for 32nd on the individual leaderboard. Matsuoka recovered from a double-bogey on the sixth hole to finish her round strong with a 2-under back nine. Senior Cathleen Santoso ended the first round a stroke behind Matsuoka with a 3-over 75, including an even-par 36 on the front nine.
Sophomore Kathleen Scavo is 4-over after shooting a 76 on Sunday, and she started the day well with a 1-under showing on the front nine. Junior Kelsey Ulep, who recorded a career-best second-place finish last weekend, rounded out the Oregon lineup with a 5-over 77.
What it Means: With two rounds left to play, the Ducks have plenty of golf left to make up some ground on both the team and individual leaderboards. Oregon is 11 strokes back of first-place Miami (Fla.) going into the second round.
Up Next: The second round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate will begin at 7 a.m. PT on Monday morning with play beginning on holes one and 10. Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start.
