Mercer Goes Seven In Shutout Effort
02/25/17 | Baseball
Sophomore Matt Mercer had a career outing to help give the Ducks a split of their two games Saturday in San Diego.
SAN DIEGO — Matt Mercer threw seven three-hit innings and freshmen slammed the door over the final two frames as the Oregon baseball team (4-3) beat Seton Hall 1-0 on Saturday, before losing at San Diego later in the day, 7-2, to wrap up play in the Tony Gwynn Classic.
Following the tournament's conclusion Saturday evening, Mercer was named the event's most outstanding pitcher. Freshman designated hitter Gabe Matthews was named to the all-tournament team after finishing 4-for-7, with all four hits coming in Friday's win over UC Irvine.
Game One: Mercer (1-1) faced the minimum through six, and used his career-high seventh strikeout to escape a jam in the seventh after allowing two one-out singles. The outing at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium was the longest of Mercer's career, and was necessary on a morning Oregon's bats largely were quiet.
The Ducks manufactured a run in the seventh without the benefit of a hit. With one out, freshman catcher Matthew Dyer reached on a two-base throwing error, and Oregon loaded the bases with a walk and a hit batter. Leadoff man Kyle Kasser then worked another walk, driving in what proved to be the only run of the game.
Ryne Nelson pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and fellow freshman Kenyon Yovan retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save.
Game Two: Oregon shot out of the gate against San Diego right-hander Jonathan Teaney, scoring twice off four hits to chase him with two outs in the first at USD's Fowler Park. But, after being stifled by Seton Hall left-hander Cullen Dana earlier in the day, the Ducks had no luck against Toreros lefties Chris Murphy and Troy Conyers the rest of Saturday's night cap.
The Ducks did enjoy the hot start, at least, with Morgan McCullough and Jake Bennett reaching on singles and coming around to score on a double by A.J. Balta.
San Diego, the Tony Gwynn Classic tournament champs, tied it 2-2 off UO starter Cole Stringer with a pair of solo home runs in the second. The Ducks got two innings of scoreless relief from Parker Kelly to keep it tied into the seventh, but the Toreros (4-2) took command with a two-run home run by Riley Adams off Cooper Stiles (0-1). USD tacked on three more in the eighth.
On Deck: The Ducks and Toreros will meet again Sunday at 1 p.m., in a non-tournament game.
