No. 23 Ducks Sweep Drake, Laurent Ties Program Record

NO. 23 OREGON SWEPT NO. 42 DRAKE, 7-0, TO MOVE TO 10-2 AND 8-0 AT HOME ON SUNDAY, AND SOPHOMORE THOMAS LAURENT TIED THE PROGRAM RECROD WITH HIS 15TH SINGLES WIN IN A ROW
EUGENE, Ore. - The 23rd-ranked Oregon men's tennis team earned its second sweep in as many matches and moved to 10-2 overall and 8-0 at home on Sunday with a 7-0 win over No. 42 Drake at the the Student Tennis Center in Eugene.
Sophomore Thomas Laurent came away with his 15th singles win in a row, moving him into a tie for the most consecutive singles wins in Oregon history.
How it Happened: Oregon jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point for the ninth-straight match. The No. 39 ranked pair of Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno improved to 25-4 all-time as a duo with a 6-2 victory at the top court, and Akihiro Tanaka and Simon Stevens followed up with a 6-2 victory of their own at No. 2 to secure the doubles point for the Ducks.
Laurent, the 36th-ranked singles player in the country, earned Oregon its second point to kick off singles play, taking down No. 55 Vinny Gillespie (Drake), 6-2, 6-3, for his record-tying 15th-straight singles win. Tanaka defeated Ben Stride (Drake), 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3 for the third point, and Stevens was victorious over Calum MacGeoch (Drake), 6-1, 7-5, to clinch the win for the Ducks on the second court.
Amos (5-7, 6-0, 6-1, No. 4), Cormac Clissold (7-5, 6-3, No. 5) and Ty Gentry (6-2, 6-4, No. 6) all picked up singles victories on the afternoon as well to complete the clean sweep and move Oregon's overall score in its last two matches to 14-0.
Laurent's Streak: With his 15th win in a row, Laurent improved to 20-2 in singles this season and 39-8 in his career while tying Stevens (2015) and Robin Cambier (2012) for the program record. He remains unbeaten in his career at the No. 1 singles spot (15-0), and has yet to lose in a dual match this spring (11-0). Laurent also improved to 4-1 against ranked opponents this season. Laurent will look to break the program record for consecutive singles wins next Sunday at UC Santa Barbara.
Notable: Amos and Soemarno move into 10th in program history for career doubles wins with their 25th all-time together … Amos moved into a tie for sixth all-time with his 61st-career doubles win ... Amos won his 64th-career singles match and is now only four short of tying Cambier for the most all-time at Oregon ... Gentry has now won four consecutive singles matches… Tanaka improves to 9-2 to start his collegiate dual-match singles career.
