Oregon sweeps Day 1 of the Kajikawa Classic
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 9 ranked Oregon softball team completed the opening day of its 2017 season just like it started it, with a win at the Kajikawa Classic. The Ducks (2-0) followed their win over Virginia earlier Thursday by dusting Creighton (0-2), 8-0, in six innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Freshman Mia Camuso sliced a 2-run, bases-loaded, double into left field in the bottom of the sixth to evoke the run rule, securing the first decision of the season for sophomore hurler Megan Kleis, who tossed five innings of one-hit ball, striking out eight while walking only one.
Oregon jumped out on top, putting up four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead, chasing Creighton right-hander Jenny Hittinger after only six outs.
Danica Mercado added to UO's run total with the Ducks' first long ball of the season, a two-run homer to right for a 6-0 lead after three innings.
Freshman Maggie Balint saw action in the circle for the second time in as many games to start her college career, striking out the Bluejays' side in order in the top of the sixth.
UP NEXT: The Ducks resume play at the Kajikawa Classic with a pair of games on Friday, facing San Jose State at 8 AM PT, followed by Fresno State at 10:45 AM PT.
