03/16/17 | Men's Tennis
THE NO. 25 DUCKS DEFEATED HOST SAN DIEGO STATE, 4-0, ON THURSDAY AND WILL FACE IOWA AT 10 AM ON FRIDAY IN THE SEMIFINALS OF THE SD INVITE
EUGENE, Ore. - The 25th-ranked Oregon men's tennis team opened the SD Invite on Thursday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over host San Diego State at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Ducks (12-2) have now won four matches in a row, and will face Iowa in the semifinals of the SD Invite at 10 a.m. on Friday. Sophomore Thomas Laurent won again in singles against the Aztecs (5-8), extending his school-record winning streak to 17 matches.
How it Happened: After dropping the doubles point in their last match against UC Santa Barbara for the first time in 10 matches, the Ducks got back on track against SDSU to take an early 1-0 lead. Simon Stevens and Akihiro Tanaka got things going for Oregon on the No. 3 doubles court with a 6-2 win, but the Aztecs' Marko Goles-Babic and Milen Ianakiev pulled even with a 6-4 victory over the Ducks' 42nd-ranked duo of Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno. Laurent and Cormac Clissold clinched the point for Oregon with a 6-4 win on No. 2 to improve to 16-2 this season in doubles.
Laurent carried that momentum into singles, where he continued to dominate. The 40th-ranked singles player in the nation dispatched Goles-Babic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, to put Oregon up 2-0, extending his program-record winning streak to 17 and remaining undefeated in dual matches this spring.
Clissold made it 3-0, Ducks, on No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Joel Popov, and senior Jayson Amos clinched the match for Oregon with a 6-4, 6-0 victory on No. 4 over Santiago Cevallos. With the win, Amos moved his career win total in singles to 88 and is now only two shy of Robin Cambier's program record.
The Ducks held leads in all three of the remaining singles matches when the match was clinched.
Laurent's Streak: With his 17th consecutive win, Laurent remains undefeated in singles this spring (13-0), playing all his matches at the No. 1 spot. He is now 23-2 overall in 2016-17 to move into a tie for sixth for most singles wins in UO single-season history, before the Ducks have even opened conference play. For his career, the Montpellier, France, native is 42-8 in singles and a perfect 17-0 on the top court.
Laurent has been nearly as unbeatable in doubles with Clissold, where the pair is now 16-2 this season and 11-1 in the spring dual matches. The win pushed the pair to 31-3 (.912) all-time together, moving them into sixth on the UO all-time doubles wins list.
Up Next: The Ducks will face Iowa at 10 a.m. on Friday, with a berth to the SD Invite championship match on the line. The Ducks and Hawkeyes met earlier this season on February 11 in Eugene, with Oregon coming away with a 5-2 victory.
