03/17/17 | Men's Tennis
NO. 25 OREGON DEFEATED IOWA, 4-0, ON FRIDAY TO ADVANCE TO SATURDAY'S CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH OF THE SD INVITE
SAN DIEGO - The No. 25 ranked Oregon men's tennis team defeated Iowa, 4-0, on Friday afternoon for its fifth win in a row, advancing to Saturday's championship match of the SD Invite at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Ducks (13-2) will face the winner of the other semifinal match between No. 30 Tulane and San Diego (2 p.m.). Sophomore Thomas Laurent continued to dominate in singles, extending his Oregon record for consecutive wins to 18 matches.
How it Happened: Playing at No. 1 doubles for the first time in their career, Laurent and Cormac Clissold got the Ducks off to a fast start with a 6-2 win to open the match. Senior Jayson Amos teamed up with freshman Ty Gentry in doubles for the first time this season at No. 2 spot, giving Oregon a 1-0 lead with a 7-6 (5) win to clinch the doubles point.
After securing the doubles point, Amos got things going for the Ducks in singles at the No. 4 spot. Oregon's lone senior took down Iowa's Jonas Larsen, 6-3, 6-1, for the 89th singles win of his career, moving him just one win shy of tying Robin Cambier's program record of 90.
With Oregon leading, 2-0, Clissold pulled the Ducks within a point of clinching the match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Robin Haden on No. 5. Laurent, ranked 40th in the nation in singles, clinched the Ducks' fifth-straight win with his program record 18th straight win, taking down Lefteris Theodoru in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Laurent's Streak: With his 18th consecutive win, Laurent remains undefeated in singles this spring (14-0), playing all his matches at the No. 1 spot. He is now 24-2 overall in 2016-17 and is already tied for third for most singles wins in UO single-season history, before the Ducks have even opened conference play. Laurent is just three wins shy of matching the program record of 27, set by Sven Swinnen in 2004-05. For his career, the Montpellier, France, native is 43-8 in singles and a perfect 18-0 on the top court.
Laurent has been nearly as unbeatable in doubles with Clissold, where the pair is now 17-2 this season and 12-1 in the spring dual matches. The win pushed the pair to 31-3 (.915) all-time together, sixth-best on the UO all-time doubles wins list.
Notable: Amos also secured the 63rd doubles win of his career, sixth-most all-time ... The Ducks have now secured their third winning streak of three matches or more this season, as well as their second five-match winning streak ... Oregon has not lost consecutive matches yet this season.
Up Next: The Ducks will close out the SD Invite in the championship match tomorrow against either No. 30 Tulane or San Diego at a time TBA.
