SALT LAKE CITY – David Peterson turned in his fifth straight dominant performance and the Ducks' scored 10 runs in the sixth inning in Oregon's 11-1 Pac-12 Conference win at Utah on Friday night.
How it Happened: Peterson (6-1) allowed just one run on seven hits in eight innings while striking out 11 and walking none. The Ducks' lefty wrapped up a dominant month of March that saw him go 5-0 while allowing just two earned runs in 36.1 innings pitched with 57 strikeouts and just two walks.
The Utes (10-13, 1-6 in Pac-12) jumped out to an early lead on Peterson with a run in the bottom of the third, but Oregon (17-6, 5-2 Pac-12) answered with a 10-run sixth inning to take command. Freshman Morgan McCullough jump started the inning with a leadoff triple and came in to score on a Jake Bennett RBI double to tie the game.
Freshman Spencer Steer gave the Ducks the lead two hitters later with a bases loaded two-run single through the left side for a 3-1 Oregon lead. After Tim Susnara walked to load the bases, Daniel Patzlaff picked up an RBI when he was hit by a pitch. A.J. Balta drove in a run on a fielder's choice to make it 5-1.
Two hitters later, Kyle Kasser drove in Susnara with a single, before Braden Stuzman added a two-RBI single to give Oregon an 8-1 lead. Bennett added an RBI single scoring Kasser and Stutzman, who scored on a throwing error by Utah center fielder DeShawn Keirsey, to make it 10-1.
Oregon added another run in the top of the eighth. Kasser led off the inning with a single, moved to third on a pinch hit single by Slade Heggen, and scored on a Bennett ground out.
Another big inning: Oregon's 10-run sixth inning was the most runs the Ducks have scored in an inning since the return of baseball … The 10 runs bested a pair of nine-run innings, including one earlier this year … Oregon's latest nine-run inning came in game two at California on March 18 in a 13-2 win … The 2014 team also scored nine runs in the first inning of a home win over Portland on April 8.
Inside the box score: Peterson struck out double-digit batters for the third time this season and the fourth time in his career … Bennett led Oregon offensively going 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored … Stutzman, batting second for the first time this season, was 1-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk … Steer went 1-for-5 with two RBI and a runs scored … Susnara was 2-for-3 with a run scored … Oregon is 6-0 on Friday's and 6-1 when Peterson starts.
