Kasser Walk-Off Gives Ducks 11 Inning Win
03/05/17 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Kyle Kasser's walk-off single in the 11th inning gave Oregon a 6-5 win over Mississippi State on Sunday and clinched the weekend series win at PK Park.
How it Happened: Kasser drove in Carson Breshears, who pinch ran for Daniel Patzlaff after Patzlaff led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed over to second by Morgan McCullough.
The Ducks (6-4) got on the board first, scoring four runs on five hits in the second. Patzlaff got the two-out rally started with a two-RBI single to score Matthew Dyer and Braden Stutzman. Taylor Travess scored when McCullough reached on an error by the Bulldogs' pitcher to make it 3-0. Kasser delivered his first RBI of the game on a single scoring Patzlaff stretching the lead to 4-0.
The Bulldogs (7-5) battled back in the sixth with five consecutive hits off Oregon starter Cole Stringer to plate three runs and make it a one run game. Elijah MacNamee provided the big hit in the inning with a two-run double to chase Stringer.
Mississippi State tied the game, 4-4, in the seventh inning on Jake Mangum's RBI double off reliever Parker Kelly. Ryan Gridley knocked in the go-ahead run two batters later with a single to center, making it 5-4.
Pinch-hitter Tim Susnara tied the game at five in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly scoring Dyer from third.
Kenyon Yovan (1-0) gave the Ducks three innings of scoreless relief, striking out six without walking a batter to pick up the win.
Box Score Notes: Stringer pitched 5.1 innings with three strikeouts and no walks while giving up three earned runs on eight hits … Stutzman had a productive day at the plate going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored … Cooper Stiles pitched a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts and keep it a one run game in the eighth … Dyer went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.
Notable: Kasser finished the series 7-for-13 with one home run and three RBI … Dyer also turned in a solid weekend going 4-for-9 with one RBI, three runs scored and four walks … Kasser also has now reached base in all 10 games this season … Oregon's starting pitchers combined for 24 strikeouts while walking just three batters in the series.
On Deck: Oregon will play a single game against UC Davis at PK Park tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
