EUGENE, Ore. – Zack Noll picked up his first career win and Isaiah Carranza earned the save in Oregon's 7-2 win over UC Davis on Monday night at PK Park.
How it Happened: The Ducks (7-4) struck first when the Aggies failed to complete a double play that would have ended the third inning. Jake Bennett and Gabe Matthews came in to score after they led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Spencer Steer followed with a run-scoring single, driving in Taylor Travess to make it a 3-0 lead.
The Aggies (3-7) responded in the fourth inning when Jacob Thomas singled, advanced to third on an error and came in to score on an RBI groundout.
Oregon took advantage of another Aggie miscue in the fourth with a Matthews two-out RBI single to score Bennett, who walked and moved into scoring position on a passed ball.
Matthew Dyer kept it going in the sixth for the Ducks with a two-out, two-RBI triple into the right field corner to score Matthews and Tim Susnara.
UC Davis got a run back in the seventh inning on a Garret Kelly RBI double off Carranza to make it a 6-2 game.
Noll (1-0) allowed just one earned run on four hits over five innings with four strikeouts in his first career start. Carranza tossed four innings of relief, giving up one run on five hits with a pair of strikeouts and no walks to pick up the save.
Who Stood Out: Matthews went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored … Steer turned in a perfect night at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a hit by pitch … Kyle Kasser kept his recent hot streak going with a 2-for-5 day … Travess made two stellar defensive plays in left field, throwing out a runner at the plate in the fourth and making a catch up against the wall in the fifth … Bennett went 1-for-3 with three runs scored and two walks.
Notable: Susnara walked five times to tie the school record set by current assistant coach Mitch Karraker in 2010 … Bennett extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the third inning … Kasser has reached base in all 11 games this season … Ducks' pitchers have recorded 71 strikeouts, while walking just five in the seven wins this season.
On Deck: The Ducks open up a four game non-conference series against the Santa Clara Broncos on Thursday night at PK Park with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
