Ducks Win Series Opener

EUGENE, Ore. – Four Oregon pitchers combined to allow no earned runs on just four hits with 11 strikeouts in a 6-2 non-conference series-opening win over Santa Clara at PK Park on Thursday night.
How it Happened: Freshman James Acuna got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and cruised through three more innings in his first career start. Parker Kelly (1-0) pitched two perfect innings of relief with three strikeouts to pick up his first career win. Cooper Stiles went 1.2 innings with two strikeouts and Brac Warren pitched the final 1.1 innings to secure the win. After allowing a single to lead off the third inning, Ducks pitchers retired 15 consecutive batters until allowing a single in the eighth inning.
Spencer Steer put Oregon on top in the second inning with an RBI single to score Tim Susnara, who doubled to lead off the inning. Kyle Kasser scored Steer from second with a base hit before Morgan McCullough gave Oregon a 3-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.
Kasser added to the lead in the third inning with another RBI single scoring Susnara. McCullough made it 6-0 with a bases-clearing, two-RBI triple.
Box Score Notes: Kasser stayed hot with a 3-for-4 night with two RBI and a run scored … McCullough went 2-for-4 with three RBI for his first career multiple-RBI game … Steer finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Notable: Kasser is 12-for-22 with five RBI and five consecutive multiple RBI games and has reached base in all 12 games this season … A.J. Balta moved into ninth on Oregon's career hit-by-pitch list with 18 … The Ducks were hit by six pitches which is one shy of the program record … Oregon pitchers have now struck out 82 batters while walking just eight in the eight wins this season.
