04/27/17 | Men's Tennis
NO. 21 OREGON WAS ELIMINATED FROM THE PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THURSDAY WITH A 4-2 LOSS TO STANFORD, AND WILL NOW WAIT TO LEARN ITS FATE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
OJAI, Calif. – The 21st-ranked Oregon men's tennis team was eliminated from the Pac-12 Championships in the quarterfinals on Thursday with a 4-2 loss to No. 17 Stanford at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
How it Happened: Playing as the No. 4 seed in the tournament after its best regular-season Pac-12 finish in program history, the Ducks (18-6) were forced to fight back from an early deficit as Stanford (##) earned the doubles point. Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno secured a 6-3 win at No. 2, but the Cardinal won on courts one and three to win the point.
In singles, Stanford extended its lead to 2-0 with a win on No. 6, as William Genensen bested Oregon freshman Ty Gentry in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Oregon responded with a pair of wins to pull even in the match, 2-2. Amos, the Ducks' all-time singles wins leader, defeated No. 112 Michael Genender at the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 7-5, to get Oregon on the board and secure the 93rd win of his career. Junior Simon Stevens tied the match for the Ducks with a win at No. 3, 7-6, 6-3, against Sameer Kumar.
Stanford retook the lead with a win at No. 5, with Brandon Sutter taking down junior Cormac Clissold in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. The Cardinal clinched the match and advanced to face top-seeded UCLA in tomorrow's semifinal with a win at the No. 1 singles spot. No. 11 Tom Fawcett of Stanford took on No. 25 Thomas Laurent for the Ducks, a match-up that Laurent won two weeks ago in Eugene, but Fawcett turned the tables on Laurent this time, winning in two sets, 7-6, 6-4.
Junior Akihiro Tanaka was in a tight match on No. 2, 6-4, 3-6, 2-3, when Stanford clinched the win.
What it Means: The Ducks are eliminated from the conference tournament, but their tremendous regular season has them set up for a good seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they will likely be a No. 2 seed.
Notable: Amos and Soemarno improved to 26-6 all-time together, moving them into a tie for 10th on the Oregon all-time list … Amos now has 67 career doubles wins, the fourth-most in UO history … Laurent suffered just his third singles loss of the spring, and just his fifth loss of all of 2016-17 … Amos improved to 20-11 in singles this season, and has now won 20 matches or more in all four seasons as a Duck.
Up Next: The Ducks will return to Eugene to await their fate in the NCAA Tournament.
