Road Trip Ends With Victory At BYU
04/03/17 | Baseball
The Oregon baseball team wrapped up a five-game road swing by beating BYU on Monday behind three Morgan McCullough hits.
Morgan McCullough had three hits to pace Oregon (18-8) at the plate, and Connor Zwetsch (1-2) pitched a scoreless inning for his first career win before giving way to closer Kenyon Yovan, who got six outs for his 10th save.
How It Happened: With the game tied 5-5 through seven, McCullough scored the go-ahead run when Jake Bennett worked a walk with the bases loaded. Then, an errant pickoff throw allowed two more runs to score, and the Ducks led 8-5.
McCullough's third hit of the day was an RBI single that made it 9-5 in the top of the ninth. The Cougars (14-12) added an unearned run in the ninth off Yovan, just the second run scored off the freshman in 16 innings this season, both unearned.
It was all Oregon early on. McCullough got the Ducks started in the third when he doubled and scored as Kyle Kasser reached on an error. Kasser scored on a Braden Stutzman double, and the Ducks made it 4-0 in the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by McCullough and Kasser.
The Cougars rallied for two runs in the fifth off UO starter Isaiah Carranza, who'd been cruising to that point. Oregon went ahead 5-2 in the top of the sixth, when Daniel Patzlaff hit a leadoff single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. But the Cougars tied it at 5-5 in the bottom of the inning on a three-run homer, which scored the only two runners to reach via walk against the Ducks all day.
Inside the Box Score: Carranza had his second straight productive start, allowing two runs in five innings. The sophomore threw five scoreless innings at Portland last week. … McCullough matched his season high with the three-hit game. He also had three hits against UC Irvine on Feb. 24. … The two BYU walks, which proved costly on the three-run homer, were the first of the year surrendered by Parker Kelly. He had 15 strikeouts this season without a walk entering Monday.
Pac-12 Honors Peterson: Oregon junior left-hander David Peterson was named Pac-12 pitcher of the week Monday after allowing one run over eight innings while striking out 11 with no walks Friday at Utah. For the season, Peterson is 6-1 with a 2.14 ERA, and 66 strikeouts with four walks. Entering Monday he was eighth nationally in strikeouts, tied for first in wins and third in strikeout-to-walk ratio (16.5:1).
On Deck: The Ducks return to Eugene for a four-game homestand, which begins with three nonconference games against UC Irvine. Oregon hosts the Anteaters beginning Friday (6 p.m., Oregon Live Stream) and again Saturday and Sunday, before welcoming Portland to PK Park on Tuesday (6 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
