JAYSON AMOS WON HIS 91ST CAREER SINGLES MATCH TO BECOME OREGON'S ALL-TIME LEADER WHILE LEADING THE #25 DUCKS TO A 4-1 WIN AT ARIZONA; THOMAS LAURENT ALSO TIED THE UO SINGLE-SEASON RECORD WITH HIS 27TH SINGLES WIN
TUSCON, Ariz. - Senior Jayson Amos became the UO all-time singles wins leader while leading the 25th-ranked Oregon men's tennis team to a 4-1 victory over Arizona on Sunday afternoon at Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.
Amos won the 91st singles match of his career, moving him past Robin Cambier (2009-12) for the most in program history. Sophomore Thomas Laurent also secured a milestone with his 27th singles win of the year, tying him for the most in Oregon single-season history.
How it Happened: The Ducks (16-4, 2-2 Pac-12) jumped out to a 1-0 lead for the second match in a row by winning the doubles point. Cormac Clissold and Laurent opened things up with a 6-3 win over Arizona's Trent Botha and Shoki Kasahara on No. 2, and Amos and Ty Gentry clinched the point for Oregon with a 6-4 win on No. 1 over the Wildcats' Will Kneale and Oliver Plaskett.
In singles, Arizona (9-13, 0-4 Pac-12) earned its first point and pulled the match even as Oliver Plaskett defeated Clissold, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot.
With the score tied, Amos secured his place atop the Oregon record books with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Shoki Kasahara (Arizona) on No. 4 for the 91st singles victory of his career.
Laurent made Oregon history of his own to pull the Ducks within a point of clinching the match, 3-1. The 28th-ranked sophomore defeated Arizona's Shoti Meparidze at the top spot, 6-4, 6-3, to tie Swen Swinnen (2004-05) for the most singles wins in program-single season history with 27.
Junior Simon Stevens clinched the match and the win for the Ducks on the No. 2 court, defeating Will Kneale (Arizona) in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.
What it Means: The Ducks closed out their regular-season road schedule with a pair of victories this weekend, putting them at 6-4 away from home this year. At 2-2 in conference play, the Ducks will now take an 8-0 home record back to Eugene for three home conference matches to wrap up the regular season.
Amos Breaks Wins Record: Amos improved his all-time singles record to 91-32 to break the UO record, and his .740 winning percentage is the best of any player on the top-15 wins list. The senior moved season singles record to 18-9, and needs just two more to have won at least 20 matches in all four seasons as a Duck.
Spectacular Sophomore: Laurent continued his stellar sophomore campaign with yet another singles victory, tying the single-season record in the process. Laurent, ranked 28th in the nation, is now 27-3 (.900) this season and 17-1 (.944) in dual matches, all at the No. 1 spot. For his career, Laurent is 46-9 (.836) overall in singles, 36-7 (.837) in dual matches and 21-1 (.955) at No. 1 singles.ICYMI, @jaysonamos7 is one singles win away from becoming the all-time leader in Oregon history.
